Re: traction motors for 32 and 45mm gauge
It is a combined gear, here's a link . Unfortunately ebay links don't stay current for long, you can usually find all the parts by searching though. Aliexpress has pretty much the same stuff. I am struggling with the final drive gear, the 40t one. I can find that size, but not with the cone boss on...

Re: traction motors for 32 and 45mm gauge
These look really useful. In the instructions the second stage is 34 plus 12 teeth, Did you buy this as a combined gear or is it two seperate gears ? I have had a look and can't see a combined gear. Or did you get it in one of the gear packs. Keen to have a go at this to would be pleased to get a p...

Re: traction motors for 32 and 45mm gauge
How trivial (or not) would it be to design / print a cover for the gears? I assume these are designed to be axle-hung, so will need some sort of mount/carrier? Phil.P Two of the pictures are with the top half of the gearbox case removed to show the gears, the other two show the assembled unit which...

traction motors for 32 and 45mm gauge
The updated version of the heavy rail traction motor is now online. There are a number of improvements over the early version for ease of assembly, you no longer have to cut the motor shaft and the case is screwed together with self tapping screws rather than nuts and bolts. Uses the same gear set a...

Re: The Cockatoo Creek Tramway
I had to do a search on the thermo electric tram and read about its story, it just looked so weird and awesome. I really love the outside-the-box thinking that went into it. (Link for the curious: https://www.gscalecentral.net/threads/thermoelectric-tram.307351/) There's been a thread about it on h...

Re: Braking systems
A little more on this: The motor controller is programmed to hold, rather than be 'off', when you return the speed control to zero. - This can be altered in programming. One thing I have noticed, compared to the Rx65, is that the speed-change is a lot more responsive (instant) this is something I h...

Re: North East Victoria Railway
As always I have been lurking but not posting! After I returned from the UK Alexander and I had a quiet run at home. Once again my terrible infrastructure limited speed limits but we had a good time anyway 352296454_678608687438374_7952093484574307683_n.jpg As always the Steam railcar began an inte...

Re: Braking systems
Good and bad news ....... Glad you found a solution, a pity you had to fry an Rx65 to get to it though .... :? Rik Yeah that was a pity, especially since I'm not sure exactly what caused it. https://i.imgur.com/Usjk1z3.jpg The only visible damage was this component that got hot enough to burn throu...

Re: Braking systems
As it turns out this problem had a rather mundane resolution. I was in the process of designing a servo operated friction brake, but before I had a chance to test it in service I ended up cooking the motor controller on 8M, the first completed motor car. https://i.imgur.com/fe2IYwZ.jpg I lamented my...

Re: Braking systems
That's a nice looking model of a 2 car Doggie set. To be prototypical, Doggies and Taits only had Westinghouse automatic air brakes. The Butterboxes, being locos, had the addition of straight air brakes for the loco only. The first use of regen brakes on the VR electric fleet was the L class I thin...

Re: Braking systems
How about combining the two? Having a servo that operates a pot. So you have rheostat braking you can apply sloftly or hard. Maybe you could even fit a pushbutton to be hit by the servo arm at the end of its travel for the emergency short circuit brake. I have this emergency shortcut brake on my 5&...

Braking systems
As trains have become increasingly heavy on a steeply graded line a very 1:1 scale problem has become apparent, the need for a working train brake. I'm wondering if anyone has dealt with this problem before, and what solutions did you come up with? The control system I use is micron radios and the m...

Re: North East Victoria Railway
Great slow running (through the day and into the night). Really liked the clackity clack through the pointwork. Took me a while to work out that the tram whistle was actually birdsong, though ;) Rik Haha it's the steam whistle at 0:02 and a wattle bird at 0:05 that obviously felt the need to...

Re: Noisy gears
so its difficult to know what the correct mesh should be. Rule of thumb used to be to put a piece of fag paper between the gears and move them together gently until they stop. I'm sure that offends the mechanical experts amongst us but it used to work. That's pretty much what I did. Measure ...

Re: Noisy gears
I haven't had any real issues with noise in the traction motor gearboxes which use 0.5m nylon gears. It is important that they mesh correctly though, even a small misalignment can make them noisy.

Late post, but we certainly made it to the GSSU this year to make sure 1:24 scale was well represented. https://i.imgur.com/mmQf28e.jpg Was it really the Great Southern Steam up though? Re: The Great Garden Railway Inspection Reports
Love it! You've really taken the narrative format and run with it. Helped no end by the fabulous features on your line. I'd be interested to know (real world) how your vehicles are powered - surely overhead would be too difficult to maintain at such a scale? Eagerly awaiting the next instalment any...
