That's pretty much what I understand takes place. From what I see of the LNR the exit from the sidings is controlled by ground signals which suggests control of the trains from those locations would be under the auspices of the signalman.

My problem (with a certain ignorance of signals) is that to control a train out of roads 2 or 3 requires clearance from a dwarf, and the home departure/starting signal. A train out of 1 road only requires the home off.  Therefore home off and dwarf off could imply to a driver on 1 road that he's fr...

Oh dear :( What have I put in my profile that incriminates me? I'm not a signal engineer or expert so I am happy to be corrected by those with knowledge of the subject. If it were my railway I would have a starter at the platform end as it would appear you have ground signals in the sidings. This wo...

I've just applied a second colour to the first of my coaches. I can agree with Doug that the masking off needs to be done carefully, but it is worth the effort. Next job is to tackle the lining! I shall be having a go with my lining pen on some plasticard I painted up before tackling a coach.

Hi Grant,

The home signal can act as a starter and/or section signal so it's function for me would help determine it's location. It can be both.

As it's your railway local rules can apply :)

George, which is very similar to Mildred, is available in kit form from Roundhouse. The chassis, boiler and body can be bought separately so effectively you could buy one in installments. It can be fitted wit r/c too. I have a Lady Anne and am a satisfied Roundhouse customer.

The subject of new builds is topical and emotive. For what it's worth, and I'm not looking for an argument, here are my thoughts as an active volunteer. The New build locomotives are not being built by any of the railways. 82045 is being built by a separate group, who happen to have chosen the Sever...

I'm glad you enjoyed the Emett layout which is one of the Warley Club's own layouts.  I designed it, and with a couple of other members, we built it.  It shows a few original working locos made in 1967.  The majority of the stock was made by me too.  This layout is still available for exhibitions. ...

The building looks superb. Well done. I recall watching a Rowland Emett style layout at the Warley model railway exhibition many years ago. It was a breath of fresh air and incredibly well modelled. It was popular and all those who saw it seemed to have a smile on their face. I certainly enjoyed it....

If I ever get round to constructing my line it will be on blocks. I considered the filcris option, but all the reports of it flexing, expanding and contracting, not to mention the expense put me off a little. I suspect I'll still get unintended gradients though. Your line is looking good. Keep the r...

That's major construction work and very impressive. I have yet to start on my line and the thought of all that work is quite daunting.

I'm a volunteer fireman and trainee driver on the East Lancashire Railway. I'm passed out to drive 08/09s. I also do other work and jobs around the shed as required. My volunteer duties do often clash with my modelling and get in the way of progressing the building of a line and making rolling stock...

Big Jim is right. On the big railway we use a paraffin and oil mix, but it is important to re-lube afterwards.

If you do need to use an abrasive, the rubberised grit blocks are excellent.

When my father started buying petrol (late 50s) it was 4/7 1/2d a gallon! When I sold petrol at our local garage (my weekend job) in the 1960s, it was 5 bob a gallon (4 gallons for a pound). When it went up by a few pence, one of the blokes my dad worked with at the builders' merchants said, "...
