I would check the wheel profile. If they are MSS, for a period of time, they produced some that were very poor quality and are not correctly profiled. Therefore they may be out of gauge. R/C control can make a real improvement to the Mamod loco 'driveability'. Merlin made an R/C conversion back in the day. It leaked because, the O- ring and the metal ring on top of the pipe were inversed. After switching them, the leak was fixed.

Well done for fixing the loco! The correct order for these parts under the steam dome is O-ring, washer then spring.
