Good advice, guys thanks! When you talk about "solvent", do you mean the stuff that people use to join PVC pipes? That is usually much too 'gooey' Keith, whereas the solvents prepared for modelling are a much thinner liquid. Peter Butler has listed a couple, my preferred brand is called '...

Without seeing the gloves in question, I would not like to comment on their thermal insulating properties. I know this isn't the same as seeing the gloves but I went to the website.   http://www.coopersofstortford.co.uk/lets-get-cooking-cooks-gloves-and-gauntlets-prodc854i/    Sorry link does...

Unfortunately I wasn't a member when this was produced so missed out, are there any still available to purchase?
It seems such a useful general item to have could it be issued again?

Nomex is a flame resistant material. It doesn't offer thermal insulation. Firefighters tunics rely on insulating material for that. Once the heat penetrates the insulating material, you get seriously hot (and stay that way, until you can take the tunic off!) Without seeing the gloves in question, I ...

the stone effect is exterior filler, engrave with a dremel type multi tool. you can carve while still green but i prefer to do it when dry, to get a better edge. i got the idea from 'the art of garden railways, reaching for realism' by ian stock; Peter do you cut that into to individual slate or mo...

As for the slate roof, I used High Impact Polystyrene from Homecrafts.co.uk (just enter that and it should show up).  I buy all of my sheet material from them as it is much cheaper in large sheets, 915x610mm,  and available in black, white and many colours, in 1, 1.5, amd 2mm thicknesses.   Deliver...

When my colleagues and I were building the 16mm exhibition layout, but before it went out on the circuit, somehow the local press got to hear about it and sent their 'roving reporter'.   His name was Harry Harrison, and a very nice old boy he was too!  His regular piece in the 'Black Country Bugle'...

Very nice job. Just convinced me to have a go at doing it to my HGLW loco. I was just browsing through Deltangs website and was just wondering where do you actually buy yours? (in the UK) Stewart I don't know about the others but I buy mine directly from David at Deltang. I give him the order and a...

I like the turntable scene, especially the "very low-relief" shed - I plan to do something similar with some quarry gates, my quarry being the other side of a similar obstacle! Cheers, Andrew. Thanks Andrew, but of course once you open the shed doors, a particularly cavernous (some might ...

A clever and very attractive build - thanks for the credit but I'm sure much of the development was down to you. I managed to squeeze two 14500 (AA sized) li-ions on board my Simplex, wired in parallel - but then Ivan designed it to accommodate two AA batteries so it wasn't too difficult. Rik You'r...

I come originally from the black country where a 'special' version of English is spoken, aye it?  : Ditto!!!!   The Black Country may as well be an island as it does have a unique version of English which can be totally baffling to some outsiders.  I think it is becoming watered down with time and ...

Following in the steps of giants (sorry Rik!)

My first traction for my garden railway was an HGLW steeplecab loco, which I christened Mochyn. She has proved a very reliable and capable, if somewhat slow, loco, and happily runs for hours on 3v from a AA twin pack. Seeing ge_rik's efforts with radio convinced me that I could also fit rc in this l...
