3 way point

Hi All

I am progressing with my line nicely and have reached the station/yard area, considering a 3 way point perhaps even a stub one?

Has anyone got any good pics/diagrams/advice

Try Marcway, they seem to specialise in trackwork of all gauges so might be able to help.

Hi Ben,

Jim's suggestion is a good one. I've no doubt you are looking for a full sized drawing and Marcway is a good source. It's not too difficult to draw your own (although it takes time!) particularly if you are computer literate (I'm not!) or have a set of railway curves (I have!). However, when it comes to more complex things like tandems and slips then it's generally easier to get someone to do it for you!

Never let pointwork of any sort daunt you, it's only basic geometry and trigonometry.

thanks guys, i already make my own point work, think im going for a home design 3 way stub, as on closer inspection i need 2 different radius (1 each side)

This also mean my large radius compass is going to need a clean

I will put up some pictures in due time

Well done Ben,

There is always something very satisfying about constructing a turnout that actually works! The tricky bit with a tandem is that pesky middle crossing. Even working it out with Pway mathematics is acknowledged in the text books as hard work and something of an approximation. They actually recommend drawing it out to prove the geometry works!

It certainly does! It also clearly illustrates my point aboiut the middle crossing. That's a real special if ever I saw one!

In the FR example, the middle crossing is 1 in 5 and the outer two are 1 in 8.

Thanks for the kind words guys, im tempted with doing a single slip next but have no use for one which is a problem. So i think im going to do a smaller stub point for my engine shed, then it is on to working rodding and a lever frame for them all

Phillipv, i got the copper clad from Marcway. One pack does 3 normal 2'6'' is points. you just have to cut it length. Make sure you make or buy roller gauges, they are priceless really.

Cheers Maple. I've built plenty of 00 and P4 points so I'm familiar with the techniques, just wasn't aware that copper clad strip was available in 'big' scales.

in that case phillip it is so much easier it will be a doddle for you ( i used to do 009 ), i found my bench grinder to be more useful that a file this time round

Yes, I guess a grinder makes sense.
All I have to do is get the asbestos roof on my garage removed and replaced with something warmer and safer ( and less leaky). Then replace whats left of the 65 year old timber doors and then maybe I'll have somewhere to put said grinder, if I can still afford one!
