I'll post the two WHR carriages once they're finished. The NWNGR carriages are already on the forum.
I've lost my AutoCAD license so work on more carriages has stopped for now. The Ashbury corridor and buffet carriages were next. I'll have to get a new laptop soon so I'll probably get a new CAD package then; likely Draftscape. The VoR brake will suffice as a "heritage" train van until the F&WHR finishes their Ashbury brake.

I've already got two Binnie ones and a couple of larger 3 ton wagons from PMVR, as well as three wooden bodied WHR wagons, so expect slate train pics soon...

Eventually I'll need to build some proper WHR (ex NWNGR) slate wagons - I'll use the same sort of technique but they'll be trickier because they weren't braced at the corners and had quite distinctive axleguards.

Brilliant Andrew, love the mixed colours..

Looking through the FR iBase; found two H.F. Wheeller photos of Boyd's "tipping" wagon: Another photo (too large for here) focuses more on WHR brake van 2, but the wagon can be found behind an FR slate wagon (in turn behind no. 2).
Research by the Welsh Highland Heritage Group concludes that this wagon isn't actually a tipping wagon; the tilt is caused by a tree growing through the wagon! Seems to be similar in dimensions and carrying capacity as the large coal wagons. Can't picture any real detail regarding the "door" (not drop side), but it seems to be on one side so it's tempting to presume that the door was similar to the large opens.

Interesting isn't it? I'm tempted by the timber bolsters too, they'd make a nice model. I think one of the Ashbury brakes ended up as a bogie flat for timber too, could make for an interesting train... I've realised that you were quite right, by the way, it is an Ashbury the FR are building, so the WHHR might still get there first with a Pickering brake...

I've heard rumours that the WHHR AGM resulted in a fair number of "difficult" Directors being replaced as a result of the Hunslet 125 controversy regarding Russell. Apparently the WHHR is now re-starting relations with the FR.
I know that with Gelert finished the overhaul of 590 will restart after Vale of Rheidol no. 7 is finished. Hopefully this new direction will result in money being freed up to finish the Pickering.
I don't know if it's still the case but the original plan was to use the heritage train (original and replica carriage's) as the main WHR set to Beddgelert(?) and use the remaining 3 (carriages 6, 7 and the VoR brake) as the normal shuttle service.
The WHHR page for carriage 6 also states that a replica of quarryman's brake conversion no. 4 is also planned. Maybe a few mixed trains?

Afternoon all!

Following a conversation about wagon loads on the (WH)WHR thread on the layouts board, I spent this morning having a go at making a slate load for one of my new wagons. It uses 4mm (?) scale corrugated iron and plasticard "slates" over a foamboard shell - I think it looks OK and will probably make some more in due course.

Here it is in the wagon:

That is a seriously impressive result Andrew, top marks for that, it looks just right. Nice colouring too, how have you managed that?

Obviously didn't take as long to make as you feared? Often the way, it sometimes takes me a while to bite the bullet but then I wonder what I was scared of!

Peter, it's just Poundland primer (which comes out slightly darker than a usual grey primer finish), with certain slates (or the corrugations which represent them) picked out in lighter or darker shades using acrylic craft paint. The whole thing was then given a wash of a watery mixture of black and navy blue. I think it's a technique the indoor modellers use for slate roofs.

And Philip, yes, it didn't take too long, a couple of hours - but that's only one! I'll do the next four of this size in a single batch, which should save time, although it might get a bit boring!

Nothing wrong with Poundland primer... I use it extensively and it is good..... especially for a pound.
The acrylics and wash work well to give it a lift, nice work. I usually add a matt lacquer to keep a 'flat' appearance which would work well on slate I think.

Wow! I honestly thought they were real pieces of slate. I was thinking "That'll be heavy!" Must get off to Poundland for a can of primer - if only it would make my models look that good! Does it contain fairy dust as an additive?

I use it too, although the cans are a bit smaller content that a Halfrauds one and the Poundland stuff seems to come in 2 different shades of grey and there is nothing on the cans to distinguish it.
