My recent redundancy has allowed me to catch up with some projects while I look for work:



These are IP kits that are in the process of being modified by me so that each wagon will look individual and can be fitted with white metal axle boxes.

I also plan to fit working brake gear (brake handle) and further detailing.

Depends on the circumstances......

I was made redundant just two years before I planned to retire anyway, but I'd been there so long that the package was equivalent to three years salary.

Even better, the thieves in Canberra got much less of it than if I'd kept working for those two years.

Better than winning Tatts and I didn't even need to buy a ticket.......

I was made redundant when I was a social worker for the mental health service. A change in regulations and funding critreia by the government of the day suddenly meant that my hard earned qualifications were deamed to be insufficent despite my eight years field experience. And because I was advised by both my doctor and professional leader that I wasn't well enough to go back to university to get the additional quals while still carrying the same caseload I had to take redundancy. It was like a slap in the face and it took me a long time to get over it.

Back to the trains; - those are nice looking kits, I should get those sheets of lazer cut boxcar siding I've got hanging around out and have a go at something similar.

There's no such thing as too many projects. Go for it.....

I've never seen laser cut matchboard siding, but it sounds better than cutting grooves in ply. Is it made in NZ, or something you organised?

From memory it's an Ozark's product that I purchased a while ago online and never got around to using. I'd completely forgotten about it and it came to light during a recent cleanup and sort session of all my model making supplies.

Can't believe how long it has been since I worked on these!



Now sporting modified choppers for closer coupling between rolling stock.

Revell matt black paint is working much better than Humbrol paint which I use to use. You don't even need to undercoat the wheels (just make sure they are oil/grease free).

Yes Sam I love the clock you gave me as thank you for visiting my line while you were on holiday. I don't get in trouble with my other half anymore for spending too much time in the garage

I've tried revel matt black, ok if you are putting it on something rough like wheels but getting a good finish with it I found to be impossible! I tried it on the tank tops of my Russell, and after several coats gave up on it and switched to Tamiya.
The shortened couplings look good

The main problem with Revel Matt black I find is how long you stir it. I had problems where when the tin was new it was fine after a couple of minutes stirring, but then after a week or two, it would no longer go matt. One day I was feeling particularly lazy and stuck a my stirring in my small hand drill and used that. I found it was fine again after I had stirred it for 5 minutes or so. No problems since then, but I do prefer Humbrol if I can get it, but matt black is as rare has hens teeth!

These having been sitting on the shelf for far too long and need finishing. I cannot keep looking to purchase other RTR or kit rolling stock while I have projects still waiting to be completed!

I tried to use the Cambrian Models rivets heads but I lost the will to live after a few attempts so went for the drill and rivets approach instead

Nice and square Tom. I have never used Cambrian rivets but have found the nail art rivets have a flat base and hold well (so far)on wood with a drop of super glue.

I think Cambrian rivets would be difficult to use on wood but on my plastikard builds I find them very user-friendly despite being fiddly. I have described the method I use in my 'Time to build a railway' thread and have just finished the construction of my latest project.

I'm not a rivet counter but I have counted the rivets on this build which took me about five hours to apply...... 517 in total.

Hi Rod, Cambrian are a company that make odds and ends for 16mm and other scales. Their 4mm kits are similar to airfix where the parts are moulded on a sprue. Their 16mm rivets are made in a similar manner and come on a sprue. They also do bolt heads that might be handy.

I have used "rivets" designed to stick on to finger nails. This was a suggestion on here a couple of years back. The 1mm ones come as a flat disc but the 2mm and 3mm come as half dome and flat backed so easy to stick to styrene sheet . The 1mm ones require a tad of pressure to ensure they stick, they are obviously punched as in the bag they are usually 4 or 5 deep. I have just noticed one of my wagon rivets is double thickness

I buy from a Swindon based ebayer and they come in bags of a 1,000 for about £2 post paid.

All said and done the brass rivets look really good but are more expensive. I may use some to secure the planks on the latest build. Model engineering suppliers carry them or Macc on ebay.
