This will be a thread updating my 5" gauge 'train set'. I will not have enough room to build a line so any updates and visits will be posted here.

Having now seen your garden, I can quite understand this!

After now having run the Wren on blocks and getting the feel of firing the loco I gave it a good clean and touched some of the paint chips up


I also made a new link for the mechanical lubricator as the movement of the valve wasnt quite enough to get an even movement on the rachet and spurl every time.

Also the 'flute' type whistle gave a disappointing gurgle instead of a 'peep'. This was swapped for a bell whistle which is 100% better.



The maxitrak design of the saddle tank means that tank lid screws down to secure the top plate (giving easy access to the hand pump). As i only needed to get to the hand pump to fill the boiler before a run it made filling whilst in steam a pain. So I fitted a bracket inside the tank with a wing nut to hold the top plate down, I then made the threaded rod inside shorter so it wouldnt foul the top. I then soldered a shoulder onto the tank lid so it was a nice snug locating fit


You will also see there is a gauze in the tank, this is to stop ash getting into the water system. Ash in the injector will quite quickly clog it up.

I also fitted a little wooden bunker in the driving wagon, everything fits quite neatly now


As my neighbour knows Paul Norman of PNP railways i was able to buy a slate wagon body off of him. I intend to bolt this to a ROR short unbraked chassis to make a riding wagon.

This is all looking very smart!

Plenty of progress even at this early stage. (Mind you, with a beaut' of a loco & stock like that, I bet it's hard not to spend time working on it! )

The line aquired aonther loco today.

I picked up a Don Young Quarry Hunslet, this loco won a bronze award at the midlands model engineering exhibition in the late 80's it ran for 20 hours following that then sat in a shed until around 2002. It was then picked up buy a gent who was going to run it, it has since sat on his side board.
The loco has a full running log documenting the weight of coal and amount and quality of the water it used! It has all the drawings and builders notes as well as the original boiler ticket invoice and paper work.

Unfortunalty the colour isnt to many peoples tastes, it will there for get the boiler tests done and have a repaint into dinowic colours.





It also came with a raised track driving trolly, which i want to sell if anyone is interested.

Wow, Don Young Hunslet so the same as Atilla, another loco that needs to run at the Joys of Life. Should look good in Dinorwic colours

Ever so slightly jealous... ( Ok I'm Very Jealous) That'll look fantastic in Dinorwic colours!

I'd keep the raised trolley if I were you as they're handy things to have if you plan to run somewhere... Locos like that tend to be easier to drive when they're raised up so you can see the fire etc better.

I agree -- keep it, you might want it to visit another club sometime.

Certainly -- I'll PM you (and Matt) -- but it tends to be a last minute decision largely based on the weather !! Derby run every Sunday afternoon from about 2 o'clock so will most likely be one of those.
