Varnishing

I'm currently looking for a decent varnish / protector for my locomotives.
I prime, then paint then add Trimline tape for lining and would like something to go over it that will hold the tape in place. I used Platikote's "Super Clear" finish but this had the adverse affect of sometimes creating bubbles, and also more importantly, it seems to move the Trimline out of position by a mm or 2. :s
What do you chaps use for finisher?

you may be spraying too much at once try lots of light coats rather than one thick one.

I've had success with Halfords clear lacquer.

Halfords clear lacquer, car lacquer I assume?
SCC- cheers for the answers. I do the clear stuff in three thinnish layers which si why I'm baffled, esp. by the Trimline movement

yeah I suppose you could say its car lacquer. I always thought of it as a rather general purpose can of stuff!

I suggest a test piece is made before putting it on the loco if you use it.
