Hello,
For those of you who have never heared of Pilgrim Locomotive Works, they manufacture true I/C locos for 32mm gauge, it's a R/C car petrol engine that drives a dynamo to power the motors, truly fasinating. I'd recommend a visit to their website : www.pilgrimlocomotiveworks.co.uk

VERY NICE!

I wonder how hard they are to build :? To expensive for me

I was quite suprised that their cheapest (complete with R/C) is only just under £1000!

I saw one of the non bogie diesels running once, it was a fraction noisy, but very smooth & a great puller! (sounds like me when i started out with the ladies...!)

Ive seen one and the driver had no end of problems with it. I think it was a tradesman the 0-4-0 one. Also no offence to the maker but the body shell looked like it has been shaped with a lump hammer.

Yes, your right, the bodywork isn't the most attractive really is it.

David Clark bought the business, but I suspect he's going to publish what he knows rather than make locomotives.

I'll see if I can link to a picture of Jerry Hyde's live diesels.

Book Review:

The secrets of the Pilgrim Locomotive works were revealed in the following publication:

Model Engineer / Model Engineers' Workshop Special Edition
"16mm Narrow gauge in your garden"

MyHobbyStore Group 2009
£4.99

The magazine was available exclusively from WH Smith who may have copies, and not long ago the Editor told me that his company has a few copies left.

Pilgrim Locomotive Works was an enterprise by gospel guitarist Barry Reeves. Barry developed crippling arthritis, and sold the business to David Clark, who is now so busy with the magazines that he decided the best way to monetrarise the asset was to publish the Intellectual Property rather than try to crank out heavy model locomotives in his Highland fastness. Much appreciated.

He boiled the material down to just two pages including seven photos and a circuit diagram. There's no theory or System approach, just nitty-gritty practical details of David's own 0-4-0 prototype.

In a nutshell, the Pilgrim design has evolved to:

Prime Mover:
OS FX26FS glow motor which is a car type with recoil starter

Mechanical Transmission:
Radiospares or ARC Euro Trade Oldham Coupling

Generator:
Como/MFA motor 719-RE540/1

Electrical Transmission:
Brian Jones Mac-Five
Regulator, capacitor, fuses etc

Traction:
'Pilgrim Special' Maxon motor and gearbox from ABC Gears
Second axle driven by coupling rods

Fuel tank:
aircraft type with fuel priming button

Cooling:
Computer type 6V fan
Rechargeable battery (looks like four cells) which drives the radio and also the fan while the engine isn't running (but not, as some have assumed, the traction motor(s)).

Other Live Diesel builders have questioned the need for an Electronic Speed Controller. However they all have some arrangement that stops the locomotive without stopping the engine, and most have some alternative 'gearing' such as series/parallel connection of traction motors. I think an ESC represents the sound and function of a diesel-electric well.

Everyone emphasises the need for a good match between the generator and the traction motor(s).

Hi David

Thanks for posting that info.

Not to sure if youve looked at my thread on this forum, under 'Antons Live Diesel': http://gardenrails.myfreeforum.org/Anto ... t4608.html

As i use a similar (although much simply) design.

Many people have questioned Barry's choice for engine and body, as they complain about the noise and the looks, but i think it was a pure work of genius and i loved his batch of locos.

I  Believe I have spoken to David Clark and or a guy who had bought the name 'Pilgrim locomotive works' and he  had a one off prototype tradesman 0-4-0 loco, which i was very interested in.

I say to anyone interested in 'Live Diesel', internal combustion powered locomotives, watch out for a few good videos of 3 or more diesels all running together as myself and a group of guys from the 'Continental garden trains' forum-

http://continental-garden-t.motionforum ... lexpo-2011

are taking a trip to the RailExpo 2011 Villebon sur Yvette near Paris on the 25/26/27 November

http://railexpo.fr/?lang=en

And all bringing our diesel locos which should be a world first, seeing many in one place all at the same time, running together.

Carl Hibbs, is the guy organising the whole thing and im sure anyone interested in live diesel will know of his name.

Thanks Anton, I hadn't seen your thread.

You mention noise. Barry put a lot of effort into developing effective silencers, and was very proud of the quietness of his final design.

Top work and info in here, I have thought of using a cox 049 to power a live "diesel".

Hey Anton, I've seen your stuff on your Youtube account & I like a lot. I would like to make a live diesel but the only loco I scratch built was Pete (& everyone knows of his little problem). Maybe someday when I get cleverer

This is the latest vidoe of 3 live diesel locomotives all running on the same line. Its a world first i believe

Hancockshire: Its really not as hard as it sounds. It just all about how much your willing to experiment, and learn from mistakes. I have the problem that i am very impatient and just want to get things done as quickly as possible.

Let me know if you need any pointers
