1/35 scale Garratt

Post by ge_rik » Sun Jan 21, 2024 6:23 pm

There seems to have been a lot of interest in Garratts recently so when my mate and near neighbour sent me a photo of progress on his latest 3D printing project I thought some of you might be interested.

Clive was born in South Africa and spent most of his childhood on a remote station on one of the SAR's two foot narrow gauge lines where his dad was station master. He's recently taken to scratchbuilding various 3D printed models of locos he remembers, which includes this rather fine Garratt

He's not a railway modeller so is only interested in building static models for display. Each model is constructed using original engineering drawings and so all the components are scaled down to 1/35 (his preferred scale). This is very much a work in progress but, as you can see, he's got a fine eye for detail.

He says, if anyone is interested in the .STL files he will happily share them

A fine looking beast indeed! Lots of detail included too. I imagine those who have 3D printing skills would appreciate it even more.

That valve gear is very impressive indeed.
I'd love to have a go at it but I know it would never fit my loading gauge. :(

The bogies and valve gear are super impressive, though I am not sure there is any floating play in the front and back bogies of the power unit. A lot easier to make it there is no play movement there, that's where I really struggled to get things right as the more movement you need the thinner the parts need to be and in plastic / resin there wasn't enough strength.
The buck stops here .......
