Hattons closing

Hard to believe. For those outside the UK Hattons is almost an institution in the railway modelling world here

Astonishing, isn't it?

Sad too. I haven't used them in decades, since moving out into the garden, but I used to order my indoor supplies from them, following in my Dad's footsteps - he showed me how to write rather formal letters to order things, always beginning "Dear Sirs"... and promising to enclose a cheque made out to the appropriate amount. Their adverts in the railway press still fill me with nostalgia (and longing after things I can't afford and don't have room for!), I shall miss them...

I did visit their shop a few years ago. Quite by accident. I was taking a friend to Liverpool and stumbled across it on what was for me an obscure back road. It was like an Aladdin's Cave.

I think I only ever bought a couple of 00 locos and a few items of goods stock from them, but it's always sad to see an established supplier disappear.
