The updated version of the heavy rail traction motor is now online. There are a number of improvements over the early version for ease of assembly, you no longer have to cut the motor shaft and the case is screwed together with self tapping screws rather than nuts and bolts. Uses the same gear set as the earlier version and the tram traction motor. The 45mm gauge version has been running in service for quite a number of kilometers now with good results.

Thanks for posting these, I can see other uses apart from trams :D .
I hope you don't mind but I've copied your post ( with its links) to our 3D Print Files section. That way the files will be with similar posts and won't get buried as quickly as your original post with time.

How trivial (or not) would it be to design / print a cover for the gears?

I assume these are designed to be axle-hung, so will need some sort of mount/carrier?

Two of the pictures are with the top half of the gearbox case removed to show the gears, the other two show the assembled unit which is fully sealed. Or at least sealed well enough to stop grass, sticks and other crud getting into the gearbox.

Yeah that's correct, they're axle hung with the back of the traction motor supported by the little tab that fits into a recess on the bogie frame. Here's a typical installation on a two axle electric multiple unit train bogie:

And for a 3 axle diesel locomotive bogie:

These look really useful. In the instructions the second stage is 34 plus 12 teeth, Did you buy this as a combined gear or is it two seperate gears ? I have had a look and can't see a combined gear. Or did you get it in one of the gear packs. Keen to have a go at this to would be pleased to get a pointer as to a particular supplier,
Regards
John

It is a combined gear, here's a link.

Unfortunately ebay links don't stay current for long, you can usually find all the parts by searching though. Aliexpress has pretty much the same stuff.

I am struggling with the final drive gear, the 40t one. I can find that size, but not with the cone boss on it, is that part of the gear or something you printed?

Unfortunately I can't see any on ebay right now, there's some on aliexpress though.
There's also a brass version. This would probably be a lot better, though I haven't tried it. It pushes up the unit cost a fair bit though which kind of undercuts the intent of it being a budget option.

I was hoping that all these gear types were sufficiently common that they'd always be easy to find in the one place but it doesn't look like that is true any more.

The cone shaped boss isn't critical, it just has to be the right number of teeth and hole diameter.
