I'll tell you what I would like, a Mamod sl1. It's a charming little engine, there are endless amounts of modifications for you to add yourself & they're cheap. However, if anyone came up on my doorstep asking if I would like to buy the mamod you have, I'll say 'thanks very much, would you fancy a cuppa?'
. I can also tell you that you can use that engine for pulling Binnie skips (also, plant some strawberries & you can make up a strawberry train). All in all, a lovely addition to any fleet:roll:

I think it's rather more than in the days of meths firing, but as it doesn't have a pressure gauge I don't really know! I think it's round about 40 PSI - I'll have to get the literature out and check.Mr. Bond of the DVLR wrote:Looks like that after a bit of tinkering it will become a useful addition to the fleet. What pressure is the safety valve set at?
One problem: the rubber washer under he safety valve is not hard enough: the first time I steamed it I tightened the safety valve down too hard and distorted the washer - no steam for the cylinders! I'm going to see if I can find an O ring to fit tomorrow.

Took Errol to Elsecar today...............

He ran a lot better and by the end of the day was continuously lapping "Westfield" without stopping - something he wouldn't do at the start of the day.
He's had multi-height couplers added (not without a little difficulty at the front - I had to detach the front buffer beam and refix it with a pair of nuts and bolts), name and number plates (and yes, I KNOW the plates are crooked - the glue melted) and lamp irons. and of course, the Mamod stickers have been removed.
He's getting a lot better.............

New Mamod
Cheap gas runner, but looks dated...i suppose thats why its cheap...which does give it an upside for cheap conversions/upgrades to a better loco
Things I don't like is roof not removable...gas tank and pipe ugly...if had removable roof a square tank could have been fitted (possibly at rear..hide under coal?)
Wheels on the one I have seen have the round fit and not the triangular ones used obtainable theses days...I fear for the old wheel loose syndrome
but and there is always a but very good value in these days of Austerity and Thrift...it will be nice to see outragous and excellant conversions
I hope you enjoy it

I used double-sided tape - I'll have to try epoxy!Mr. Bond of the DVLR wrote:The glue melted on the name plates on river butley, I'm not sure what to use...
Looks like it ran well! Was the show well attended and how long is the run time?
Sunday was quiet to start with but it got busier in the afternoon - the fact that it was Thomas on the Elsecar Heritage Railway might have brought a few more customers in!
I gather Saturday was busy........
No idea on run time - we were short of operators so it was a "turn it round as soon as it stops running" - type day. I'll try and remember to time it next time, but I would expect the run time to go up and the amount of regulator needed to go down as he gets run in.

Gas powered Mamod
MOLECULES ?? (possibly)SillyBilly wrote:Running nicely for a mamod.
Crackingjob,
Apparently round gas tanks are safer than square tanks, especially if Butane/Propane mix is used.
The other point I forgot to add (or two) this loco is built for the nastalgic oldie hense its look...mamod seems to sell a Tin Plate collectables
Also, excellant Loco to add to over a period of time year or two, but and there is always a but...for the cost of Loco £190 plus £200 plus for extras/hours etc you could be within a shout of Edrig/Millie.
The one plus apparently good thing about this Loco in the American Garden Railways review was the Ceramic gas burner and that it was quiet and allowed you to hear the sounds of the Loco...so not all is lost....and anyway all the best to a little company trying to make its way...I hope its built in the UK

Re: Gas powered Mamod
............ except this one doesn't need all the "extras" that it used to. All I've added are the name plates, multi-height couplings, lamp brackets and bucket! I've got to put a bit of that tubular stuff that shrinks when you heat it (can't remember the short name at the moment) on the handle for the reverser and I might consider re-routing the exhaust up the chimney.Crackingjob wrote:Also, excellent Loco to add to over a period of time year or two, but and there is always a but...for the cost of Loco £190 plus £200 plus for extras/hours etc you could be within a shout of Edrig/Millie.Crackingjob
You do have to watch the gas burner - it will send flames OVER the boiler if you turn it up too far - just like a meths-fired one........
