With me being new to 16mm modelling I have a question about the best way of cutting this type of track. I have tried a junior hacksaw but it just does not mark the rails, any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Hacksaw should work fine.

Have you got a new blade fitted that is for cutting metal and not wood?

I use a junior hacksaw with a metal cutting blade and that works well so you should be fine. Maybe, as tom said, a different blade is in order?

Fine tooth straight metal cutting blade, normally teeth facing away to cut on the downstroke. But i normally do it the otherway round when holding the blade so it doesn't bend

And needle files to tidy up, diamond coated work well.
Or you could just use a cut off wheel in a dremel.
Fishplates aren't very good, would using thermex work in 16mm?

I cheated and used a dremel cutting disk, good for tidying up afterwards too. Just make sure you wear safety glasses if you go down this route, lol ;)

I use a Dremel type disc also.
Quick and accurate with no slipping with blades getting its first bite.
