Wiring

Ok - this is a bit of a back to basics one but thought I'd get some input from you guys and gals
How do you go about connecting the wiring on your locos/scenery etc - because my only electrical experience is household DIY based, I tend to use connectors which tend to work fine in a 1:1 scale and with the much thicker wiring involved, but at 19:1, I'm finding the wiring tends to knock screw down in the connectors or breaks out if any tension ends up being on the wire. Or they are too big to fit into the tight spaces inside my locos & guards vans
I know is basic stuff but would appreciate any pointers on methods, good books or youtube videos.
I can do basic soldering of joining a wire to a motor/switch most of the time - my issue is mainly joining wires to wires, sometimes when there isn't much to play with on both sides!
Thanks for any input
Mark (highly embarrassed) of the CHLR!
