Does anyone know if I can feed a mylocosound unit from 24v?

I would like to add sound to one of my 7 1/4 gauge diesel locos, and I would like it to be speed sensitive.

Ideally I would like to power it from the main traction batteries (24v), with the speed signal fed from the motor supply.

I am not to hot on electrical stuff, so am a bit confused.....

No, 24v will make it go pop with smoke, etc...

You could reduce the voltage from the battery to 12v using a converter but check amp output, many about on Google.

Mylocosound is not designed for that size so I would go for the Mtroniks range:

Your 7 1/4" gauge engine will most likely have 2 x 12volt batteries so if it is a 12v unit just connect it across one of them. I don't know the mylocosound units but if pwm they just need the pulsed output from the controller I believe. Best to contact the makers of the mylocosound unit and no doubt they can help.

That is a good suggestion, but the signal from the motor will still be 24v - presumably this will still fry a sound card?

Fair point about the Trax system but they do a 24v version if you have a look http://www.traxcontrols.com/modules.htm

The problem with the traintech unit is it doesn't look like you could fit a seperate speaker. For your application you will need to fit a much larger speaker to get the required level of sound. You may need a larger capacity battery as well because a larger speaker draws more current. This is from my own experience fitting Trax units to 5" engines.
