Iron ore

Hi guys,
Has anyone ever made an Iron ore load? If so; what is a good representative?

Iron ore can range in colours from dark grey to red.
I would be tempted to have a look at some red/brown small gravel. Possibly try an aquatic shop as most seem to have a good range of decorative stuff for the bottom of fish tanks.
Failing that try cork crumbs.

Strangely enough, one of the best and cheapest is iron ore itself. There's a swathe of it running right across England, evidenced partly by the warm brown buildings made of it, plus smaller patches of varying colours. I picked up a handful from the beach at Rutland Water.
Where are you located?
In terms of representations, any pale brown or red brown clay will do, ground up lumpy.

Thanks for the suggestions!
As they will be for a Narrow Gauge Forest of Dean freight, maybe I should look around there! I already have a set of Narrow Gauge Cannop colliery trucks to go with them

Then you'll want a pale ochre. These pix are from Clearwell Caverns mine which is open to the public and might be sympathetic to parting with a paper bag full.

Failing that there is a lovely "red" stream just down the hill by the giant stained glass window (opposite side of road to Speech House Hotel). Very pretty round there so a nice walk into the bargain!
