I've just bought a secondhand 0-4-2T loco which was constructed from a GRS kit using an LGB ToyTrain motor block. It has the look and feel of an Irish 3' gauge loco - does anyone recognise what it might have been based-on? My researches so far have drawn a blank.

I reckon it's the WHHR's Bagnall, Gelert:



It looks like a kind of rough approximation rather than a scale model - I've got drawings somewhere...

Looks very similar. I wonder if Bagnalls made any 3' gauge versions with inside frames

Don't know about the inside frames, but it's a chunky little loco so I reckon a 3' version would've been a possibility...

Will it go into your standard green?

Yep! Just been out to Halfords and bought a can of primer and another of Brunswick Green. I've already dismantled her and have started rubbing down. Decided that I can't retain the existing rivet detail - too fiddly to rub down around it - and so I'll rub down to bare plastic and apply Cambrian rivets. I'll also hide the electronics in the side tanks rather than the cab and so will detail the backhead. Might add a few more cosmetic details as well.

Before stripping her down, I gave her a test run with the four stake wagons which I bought from the same source.

The RCS radio control is OK but doesn't seem to have the range of the Deltang / RCT system. So, after the repaint she will have an Rx65 fitted, linked into the soundcard (which is an early version with the manual setting adjustment rather than the remote control adjustment.

Looks like it will be a good addition to the fleet. Its the only other one of those I've seen apart from the one in the WHHR gift shop. Its interesting - on your video it sounds like the camera is picking up the transmitted signals?

What a lovely loco Rik. I look forward to seeing it after the enhancements and repaint. I think your livery will suit it very well. The slow speed is beautiful!

Aha, yes of course, chugging around at ceiling height. Never got a close look at it.

The transmitter was in my hand beside the camera - it emits faint audible warbles as each key is pressed. I think that must be what you're hearing.

If you remember, the Bagnall was in black lined livery .....



...... and the LGB timber wagons were also plain black.



Well, after a trip to the paintshops, the loco is now in the PLR livery of Rover Brooklands Green (thanks to Mr Halford), ....



I have tried to disguise the lack of outside frames by painting everything below the waist black (apart from the motion).



And the timber wagons now have a job of work to do .....

Still more to do - name, number and works plates are on order, the soundcard needs a bit more tweaking and there are a few more details to be added (eg more pipework, lamp brackets, whistle, etc.). Nearly there!

The new paint job is pretty effective. The engine is totally changed. It looks great.

Thanks folks. I think she'll also need new batteries. Either that or this early version of the MyLocoSound soundcard is very thirsty.

That is a very nice running loco and train, well done.
I must admit that I've never really liked red painted motion, but it seems to work well on this.

Re the sound card, I seem to remember that you were getting a custom one developed for your "RC Trains" venture, is there any progress on that?

Stalled on the soundcard for the moment. The chap producing it is heavily into boats and planes and is snowed under at the moment. I might give him a poke to see if he's re-surfacing.

Inside frames shouldn't be an issue. The PLR is 3' gauge and if it had survived to buy an early '50s Bagnall, it would probably have been built with inside frames, unlike Gelert which was built for a 2' gauge line.

Most Bagnall designs were available in a range of gauges and it's entirely possible Gelert had a 3' gauge sister somewhere.

There's no hard and fast rule, but 2' gauge locos usually have outside frames and 3' gauge usually have inside frames. There are always exceptions, but it's a reasonable rule of thumb for a freelance railway.

Very nice job Rik. That's a lovely loco. THe train was a pretty hefty load wasn't it? The new loco seemed to stroll away with it though.

Lovely to see a train doing a real job too.

Very nice! The WHHR ought to consider Brunswick Green for the real thing when they've finished the current overhaul on "Gelert"... The red rods look great too.

I enjoyed the video too - I'm considering a timber siding for my line and feel suitably inspired...
