Just putting the finishing touches to the sluice gate. Too dark (and cold) to get some in-situ pics, but you can get the gist of it from these:
.
The sluice gate in its raised position

.
The raising crank. The ratchet and pawl is decorative, too much of a fiddle to make it operative. There's sufficient friction in the system for the gate to remain raised. The gearing, rack and crank do actually work, though

The gate in its lowered position.

The structure is made from off-cuts of foamboard.
Still got to add railings and give it a paint job, but getting closer to finishing.

I've gone and dug a hat out from the wardrobe, just so I can go and doff it to you sir - that has to be one of the most splendid things I've seen on this forum - and its not a train!

So Rik, when do you start on the canalised section of the river with a working staircase of locks?
Seriously, that is seriously good!

Thanks Andrew.
Funnily enough, that is something I've always fancied doing, since I was a teenager. However, it would be a logistical nightmare.

The sluice gate is now in situ and does a rather fine job of controlling the water flow to the wheel ....

Hi Rik brilliant modelling of the sluice gate and water mill. The sluice gate works a treat letting the right amount of water through to control the watermill.

Love the controlled rotation, and the flow rate of the stream/race. You’re making me replan the RLR version 2 (currently suspended).

Another top job Rik. I found by putting a large flywheel (a cast gear about 7"diam.) on the wheel shaft inside the mill allowed the wheel to run very steadily. Looking forward to seeing your mill weathered and settled in.
