I think either would be feasible. However I do have some limited experience of signwriters in real life and I certainly have seen them working off ladders. Plus, don't forget you are in an era well before 'elf 'n safety.

Must say that they are very talented people, used to watch one who did the sign writing on my Dads lorries

Actually, I've got a mate in the village who used to be a sign writer and come to think to it, I've seen him up a ladder outside a shop repainting and lettering its sign. So. either scenario is a possibility. Just need to check the 1911 census to see if there were any signwriters in the area - would be good to give him a name.

Latest update:

Slowly but surely (hopefully), I have been working on detailing the interior. Just about finished the saw carriage and its track, though need to install a representation of the pulley/funicular system for driving it. The log dogs were a bit of a fiddle. I did try fashioning them from metal but my skills aren't up to it. Once painted, plasticard should look fine. Thanks to Philipy and Metalmuncher of this parish, I am now in possession of sufficient 3D printed pulleys of various sizes to complete the overhead lineshafts (once I've finished all the machinery). Here you can see another reason why I am a great fan of this forum and its community. Rik

Glad to see the wheels worked out for you Rik rather than having to buy the brass ones I had and then grind them down.

That's all looking very convincing Rik, the carriage will be fine after painting and the pulleys are going to be the finishing touch. You are correct about the support and help freely given by Forum members, I have had the pleasure of it myself and really appreciate it.

Yes, doubt it will be completed before we fly off to India (a week on Saturday). The fiddly bits seem to be taking longer than building the structure itself!

Just been catching up with Michael Portillo and now really looking forward more than ever to the Shimla train journey which (all being well), we'll be doing on Monday 2 April.

Brilliant work on the log carriage and dogs, and those pulleys, well congratulations all round. Going to look good all painted up. Hope your collecting lots of fine sawdust!

Have to agree with you on that point of helping members out on the forum, some of us just don’t have the skills needed, but there are always members who will lend a very welcome helping hand.

Thats always the case, and not only that, they always take 3 times longer than you expect!

I'm always thankful that others enjoy going in depth to create detailed scenes on their layouts so I can have something to enjoy reading and have pictures to view since I'm more inclined towards adhering to my 10 foot rule philosophy on my own layout.

Gradually populating the interior of the mill. Need to make another table saw and the mill engine, and then decide exactly where everything will be fixed into place and then I can start on installing the overhead line shafts.

As you can see, I tend to make use of all sorts of 'recycled' items - amazing what can be found in the 50p shop.

Rik you are really moving on with the sawmill. Love your models, look so realistic, I can see myself working in there.

It's in the middle of nowhere a few miles from here.

They started off over 20 years ago with a small garden centre and billed themselves as the largest 50p shop in the world - which was (and maybe still is) probably true. They're still going with a vast range of 50p items but they also now have a £1.00 aisle and even a £2 aisle. Very handy when I need something with wheels which I can butcher into something else.
