Well done on getting the first bit of track laid! This'll be one to watch

I like the spiral idea... have you got a rough track plan?

I have a rough plan in my head but nothing is set in stone. It all depends on how things look in the garden.

I have never been one for detailed plans of layouts either large or small. I find it best to have an idea and then see what it looks like.

I find this works well in most areas when you do not have a perfectly flat and square plot to work on. (Listen to the sound of the pureists screaming!)

Many years ago I built a model of a local station in 2mm scale. As it was quite a compact track plan I just scaled it down. The layout was totally to scale and the track plan was bang on but it never looked right as a model. It never got finished.

I hope it will be "One to watch" for all the right reasons!

I doubt it will ever be on the same level as some of the other amazing lines that people write about on here but we shall see. I do fancy a sort of anglised DHR feel to the line but it will probably end up as somthing totally differernt. My problem is that I like odd things. I have a weakness for small locos, (Motor Rail etc) and will probably end up with more stock than I will ever need.

The other thing is the railway needs to be child friendly as my little Grumper is the main reason I got permission for the wife to build it. (Its for Thomas and I to play with dear, honest)

I can't see much progress being made over the next few weeks as apparently there is something called Christmas coming and the current Mrs Big Jim has other ideas about how my time should be spent.

More Track laid today.
I am now up to the amazing length of 6 yards!
Still its down and while it is part of the layout that will be rebuilt as a station it does give me an idea of how the line needs to progress.

I also had a steam up of my new engine.

All in the rain and wind, I must be bloody mad.

Still it beats Xmas Shopping.

Good progress, looking forward to photos. I often find myself thinking I must be mad when standing in the garden in the pouring rain re-railing a loco for the 11th time, still wouldn't have it any other way.

Major progress on the garden front.
I have finally got the railway shed up and nearly finished.

The shed will be my modelling room as the current wife has decided she wants the spare room back.
Insulation will be covered with ply and Power is going in tomorrow night.

Wonderful progress Jim..... having the shed in place will be a great inspiration to push ahead with the railway. I'm impressed you have managed to prise Alan away from Doris (the Morris) to help too!

Fantastic shed there - I know of one modelling shed with a wood burning stove in and a fridge for beers - have you these plans?

Not much progress tonight due to a telephone that has not stopped ringing, a neighbour with car problems and a wife with the nagging control turned up to 11.

I did manage to escape from work for a few minutes at lunch time and have priced up the cost of sealed units (double glazing) for the windows. All six for 72 quid!!!!! As I have just quit smoking this equates to about a weeks worth of fags.

I would like a wood burner but I feel that this, combined with large amounts of softwood, well soaked with creosote is just asking for trouble.

As for a beer fridge, well as an ale drinker I like to taste my pint.

Mind you I would need somewhere to keep the ice and tonic for my G&T.

In a suburban garden that would be a lovely shed to own.....all those windows. I have to a few high level windows to keep wondering eyes out. At least in that location you may be able to keep it pure railway and not garage overflow

A nice piece of engineering, bodes well for the spiral.

It has to be railways only. If any of my car related stuff gets in there I am in serious bother as three large garages are full of car stuff already.

Maybe the really dodgy LP collection will end up there as well, and the guitar and all my......

Ply lining all done and lighting installed.
I think I may have gone a bit OTT with the lights. My previous experience of energy saving bulbs suggested that they were nowhere near as bright as they are supposed to be. (yes I know they fade over time)
I acquired some from a local electrical place and they are brilliant but 6 x 15w bulbs is a little too bright perhaps.

Now all I need to do I wire a proper supply to the shed rather than using an extension lead from the garden socket.

Next job is to sort the flooring out.
