I actually find that one attractive! But what's going on with the cylinder situation? It almost looks like the chimney is going right through the cylinder(s). And it (they) look(s) unusually short.

My anger has dissipated and now I'm just confused. He's modeled lots of weird locos like this so I'm having a hard time imagining him thinking a locomotive was hideous. Unless it was the first one in this thread...

Keep the pictures coming, I'm enjoying seeing all these strange locomotives!

Actually it would appear that the cylinder is encased in the smokebox, probably to keep it warm and pre-heat it to prevent water condensing inside. Am I correct?

Correct- the cylinders are built into the top of the smokebox. It is noted in the book that the arrangement "doubtlessly kept [the cylinders] nice and warm." She was built in the early 1860s and served until at least 1884 as a contractor's loco for hire. I've been thinking about how the principle could be adapted to two-foot gauge (or thereabouts) but it's beyond my skill level at the moment.

Marc Horovitz was hit by an SUV while he was walking in his neighborhood on Friday, October 27th. He was in Denver Health Hospital with major injuries. He is now home recovering from his injuries.

That's not good to hear... I hope he (sometime in the relatively near future) is ok. Do we really need more proof that SUVs are dumb?

Oh dear, I know the scale is a little out at the moment, but I am working on it, all be it, slowly If I ever get around to finishing it, well, we will see.

But if you look at it closely you'll see they aren't perfectly upright, and the smaller dome is slightly more upright than the larger one. That's what it looks like to me anyway.

I think all three are parallel to the cab front.

I agree, I tried both ways twice and parallel to the boiler is what looks closest to me.

The chimney and front dome are definitely angled back slightly. I don't know about the rear dome. Compare Steve's drawing to the original picture.

Print it in something flexible so the chimney and domes can wobble in and out of alignment as it trundles down the track

I think it's just an optical illusion, but no matter how it really was, this is just my interpretation of it and therefore is right

If you hold a ruler up to it you can see that they are indeed at different angles. It might look better if they were upright, but "better" probably isn't what you'd be going for if you were modeling this! (If you were I that is.)

As far as I can tell it's on topic or close enough, but maybe we could change the name to "In search of the ugliest train" or something more generic like that? I don't know who Marc Horovitz is and don't want to wish him ill, but I'm enjoying the general conversation. Maybe a mod or other experienced member has a suggestion... I'm still pretty new here myself and still getting the hang of the way we do things.
