The points look interesting! I'm currently down in Essex at the moment and found a little model shop, and the guy reconed that i could build a set of points for £20! and also i'm currently building 4m of track, cheaper than peco flexitrack!

Nice work though and i love the little ground frame!

Trust me mate I have no talent! There's the right way to do it & then theres my way. I may not be good at painting or building stuff but I enjoy trying & thats what counts..

It's just Peco kit bits. Now it was shown on this site by another (more talented member) how to build points, wish I could make them like he did! Mine was just a go at trial & error with a track gauge & a 32mm wheelset. It's never going to be up to mainline standards but will do where I want it in a yard. Just need to fit a tie bar now & then it's done. Next project is a stub point though, will see how that goes!

i think i saw that post and if i cant remember rightly you was really interested in it :D

considering it is a trial and error piece, it looks pretty damn good if you ask me :D

could you point me in the right direction (no pun intended) about where to get the bits and pieces from?

Hi Tom,
Most Peco stockists seem to carry the point components as well. My local shop did have some, now it doesnt as I had the last bits..

Progress this afternoon,

Worked on tie bar & lever frame on the point..

Still got lots to do with it yet.

Also started on the stub point that will follow on after the other point...

Just need to do that crossing nose & the check rails hopefully & then sort out a lever for it. Already have brass slides ready to go on.

can you not order the compnents online? my local only does N, 00, and a few bits of 009.

and now youve lost me

, what is a stub point? i think ive worked out how it works,

is the wooden bit fixed and the plastic parts flexible and it goes between the two meaning you dont need point blades etc, its just a really basic point?

and is the tie bar the thing that holds down the point blades and moves when the lever is pushed/pulled to switch the point?

I guess you could order direct from peco or any ng track place like trackshack. You need a fair bit to start with. I got chairs, slide chairs, long sleepers, crossing nose & the wingrails plus had to buy 6 yards of rail in one go. All that probably cost as much as a point but there are bits left to make more points if I make my own nose & wingrails which I am doing on my stub point. Talking of which you are correct that is basically just a simple point setup. They seem to use them more in real life in the usa, but there is a 3 way one on the FR. Oh and yes, tie bar is the part that moves the blades.

right, chairs are what holds the rails down to the sleepers? sliding chairs, help the rails slide for flexible track? what are crossing nose and wing rails? the little bits in the middle?

Hi Tom,
Yes I believe you are supposed to bend the rail first (I don't really though, just bend it to fit by hand, these are just yard points). Also cutting rail you have to do. To be honest one of the best investments is a dremel type drill with a cutting disc anyway & these work well with rail.
Chairs, yes they hold the rail down, slide chairs are the bits that go under the moving blade parts of points. Crossing nose is what some people call the "frog", The "V" part. In 21 years on the real railway I have never heard it called a frog though! Wing rails are the outer rails on the crossing nose.

Finally managed to get some work done to the actual P-Way on the CVLR. Nothing major done yet but it's a start. All I have done is start to replace the very temporary return loop. It was going to be just a straight line there in the finished version but the plan has changed & a permenant return loop is to be installed. As the line after that will be far from level so any non RC or weak loco's will be banned from beyond this point & instead turn back on the loop.

First job was to lift the existing formation.

The radius is to be increased a fair bit as those setrack curves caused havoc with my stock. So far have set about half the loop in & now just waiting time/weather to finish the rest.

In the meantime I started work on some tunnels.

The footpath to the sundeck tunnel.

And Harleys tunnel.

Both have yet to be finished & blended in to look less like Telford/Milton Keynes!

& finally I installed an app on my android phone the other day called 'retro camera'.
Thought I would share some unedited pics using this app as I find them quite good.

Track lifted as part of the return loop rebuild.

i understand it all now, i knew they were called frogs as thats what their called in 00gauge terms and thats where i got a little confused as they were called something else, it all makes sense now but i think ill give it a miss for the moment and jsut make some track as its hopefully a bit more easier,

Im liking the tunnel, are you going to put a proper mouth on it in the end?

and those pictures of the slate wagons are excellent!!

but the wagons would look better with a proper slate load on them

Had some time off & got cracking on with some more line work. Actually could of got a lot more done but having time off when you have a baby girl means you have more time to see & do stuff with your baby girl. I wouldnt change that at all.

Anyway, return loop relaid with less severe radius (Still need a load of topsoil to blend it all in & get rid of the wall of death look, but at least now my IOM coach can get around it without binding much!)

Then decided to change the level line plan & got cracking with an extension that followed the lawn's gradient. Worst bit is 1 in 36, mostly around the 1 in 60 though. Seems to work ok.
- IP Rapier hauled a cooper craft wagon & Mamod brakevan up it.
-Edrig hauled 15 accy wagons up it no worries.
-Carrie hauled 17 accy wagons up it, was slipping a little but also was on the flat with that load.

More topsoil needed to landscape this though but at least I have a longer run now. Actually spent all day "playing" trains with it. :roll:

Yes I know theres a bridge missing. The return loop.

"Tin Tin" (No 11 ex river Helford) takes a test train up 'Llangunllo' bank (named after a bank on the Heart of Wales line I used to slide down & struggle up in 153's & 150's when I was with ATW). This is the 2nd train to test it, first was the IP Rapier.

Looks quite severe but not that bad, the level bit is a bridge. Hope to build a water feature under that.

Almost all the route built on thursday.

Finally another shot I just like, also enjoying the fact I can run through "Lens crossing" as it's now not the end of the line.

Great progress Shane, you've made a nice job of the extension! I'm consoled by the fact that I'm not the only one who gets side-tracked "playing trains" when there's other jobs to be done

I keep meaning to ask you about the ornate finials that you have topping off some of your signals. Are they from kits or available seperately? (Or have you found a cunning use for a "found" item?)

Greg, the finials are part of the kit from cambrian. A bit fiddly but ok, cat has removed one & I took another off with the strimmer the other day. Easy to glue back on though. Will be removing them soon for a while anyway as my daughter is close to walking so don't want her to fall on them. Will put them into store until shes older.
