Heres the video of Madge's first run on the WR, not steep gradients and horrid cambers! This was before she went to JoL and only her second steaming...

Well today I finished the upper body work on the carriage. It looks even better than I imagined, quick reminder. Its a model of a 15 inch gauge open carriage.
First the ends went on

Then I noticed that the angle iron was all bent!
Don't worry, out came the plane and the rest of the wood panels were shaped to suit. You can see the planked floor which was some left over tongue and groove. The seats are just scrap MDF and will be covered at a later date with foam and leatherette seats.

The middle "seating" compartment was then tested for size

and added, it fits onto the main beams with dowels so is removable if anyone with very long legs and feet wants to get in. The middle compartment has a thin shelf for putting cups of tea on...

Now if you are thinking this is a large carriage, you are wrong...
Here's sister jib and me testing out the carriage for size (and testing the tea shelf)

and dad...

The carriage has been carefully designed so if one person is sitting in it it won't see-saw. The seats are inboard of the bogies.

The upper frame is made of 1x1 inch pine with 9mm ply screwed on. The body is removable and is a very sturdy structure.
The last thing I did was to wood filler all the countersunk screws and joints in the wood ready for painting next fortnight.

Was actually planning on cutting the letters out of sticker type material on the school's vinyl cutter. Gold or yellow lining on red carriage body with gold shaded black lettering. Was also considering painting the inside of the carriage brown.

What is the world coming to? My dad (a petrol head) wants to make a petrol electric loco for the railway. An idea which I am in support of as I don't always have MADGE at his house. We had an old Suffolk Punch loco which I took apart and rebuilt as a child but he took it to the tip several years back -drat!-. On going to the local scrap yard it was found that they had 7 old lawn mowers. 3 of which were Suffolk Punches. He was not allowed to, however, buy one due to legal restrictions. In short, you can't buy scrap at a scrap yard any more...
Its all because there are cameras everywhere and the attendants arn't allowed to sell anything to customers encase of illegal back handers etc.
So there are 7 working lawn mower engines that no one is allowed to own...

Back on track with the carriage project. A trip to the upholsters and we had some fake leather for the seats, a square of carpet followed by some foamey underlay stuff and lots of staples and we have a slim yet surprisingly comfortable (well compared to the bare mdf) seat.

Followed by lots of sanding, staining and painting.
The stain is dark oak (same as the railway sleepers) and the colour is homebase's own exterior wood and metal paint "regal red" gloss.

Obviously it needs another coat but that will have to wait until next time as it was getting dark and the paint was taking a long time to dry.
