Can I ask a question please? On the steam loco, am I correct in thinking that the central dot at the 12 o'clock position does not indicate/set "regulator shut"? From what I could see "regulator shut" is at 5 o'clock position, and fully open is at 7 o'clock. Is that correct?
Yes, with the servo on a live steam loco you get the full travel of the servo from the full turn of the speed knob - the direction/reverser knob changes the direction. Any of the RCT/Deltang receivers can be set to operate in 'low-off' mode rather than 'centre-off'. Some people prefer to run their battery locos in this mode - using the direction switch/knob to change direction.
Usually fully closed would be at the 7 o'clock position and fully open would be at the 5 o'clock position - it just depends on how the servo has been set up

Here is a video of a live steam engine being used with an RC Trains modified TX24. Its modified to have an extra switch for use with electric loco's to enable me to switch sound on / off. The additional switch is not used on live steam, but could be used for a whistle if you did not want to use the bind switch for it.
No inertia used, however the regulator servo is a little sticky sometimes, nothing to do with the RX or TX, just a dodgy servo, I will change it out at some point

I am very interested in switching over to this as with a slomo device using a control knob rather than a joystick should give excellent running results.

No problem Tom
With a slomo device as well as the option of using the inertia on the RC Trains TX's, this would give you almost infinite options of how you wish to control your loco. The joysticks I just never got on with for this purpose as you either need to hold them where you want them all the time, or remove the return spring and guess where centre is, I also found the joystick type TX's were too easy to knock when picking them up or putting them down.
If you use the RX102 RX for a live steam loco this also gives you options of reducing or extending the movement of a channel as well as reversing it, both by using programming, more details can be found on the RC Trains website under the RX102 receiver. You can not do this type of programming to any other RX that I am aware of, and for this purpose, its very very handy.

Yes, this is using the standard Deltang or RC Trains TX system which do not have these on the TX, therefore you need to have these programmable on the RX, which a standard RX does not have as they use the TX to do this. If you follow the thread through you should get the gist of what was being discussed and about which system, all a bit confusing with so many different system types about.
If you are using a Spektrum DX4 or DX5 then again, you do not have end point adjustments, depends how much you want to spend and if you mind using a plane TX. For example, my RC plane TX with 14 channels I can set throttle curves, endless mixes linking channels, absolutely all sorts, the list goes on and on, but they just arn't needed in this situation, and at the end of the day, its still a plane TX.

thanks for the videos , very intersting!
