the site in the photograph was linked to a railway that was once run by a certain colonel.

They're not ammunitions stores are they by any chance? possibly converted to farming buildings?

If it's ammunition, and it's Colonel related, I reckon it's the Shropshire and Montgomeryshire - Nesscliffe, according to Wikipedia...

Correct! It is the former Nesscliffe ammunition depot.

The site was built in 1941 to provide ammunition storage for the British Army. It was connected to the national rail network by the former Col Stephens Shropshire and Montgomeryshire light railway. The system remained in use until the depot closed in 1960, and all the remaining locos and stock were transferred to longmoor.

Today, the site is a training camp for the British army, and the old depot buildings are used for training purposes. I was at the camp for a week long exercise, and had to spend a night sleeping in one of the old buildings. The track is still there embedded in the concrete.

I'm afraid not. I reckon both of those must have a daily mileage in the low hundreds?

As far as I know none of these "passenger miles" could actually be enjoyed by the general public...
