The great (Mamod) gathering

As mentioned in my topic about the Silverdale Light Railway (North) steamup, there was a side attraction. This was the NWAG's take on the National Railway Museum's Great Gathering of the A4 class locos. Or rather, it was PTLRcecil's attempt to prove himself for the top job at the NRM.... He decided to gather together as many Mamod type locos as possible. Despite James not being able to make it, NWAG members managed to gather 8 mamods, which as PTLRcecil points out is two more then the NRM managed....

To really fit the theme of replicating the great gathering, each mamod received a new name in the style of an A4 name


Introducing "Union of South Cumbria"

"Silver Solder" (originally owned by Peter Jones of Compton Down fame)

"Mamard" (a new addition to the PTLR fleet, looks like a Jane but appears to have Mamod frames)

"Silver Fux" (or should that be Silver Flux?)

"Sir Nigel Oscillator" and "Dominion of Morecambe", both rarely seen members of the PTLR fleet

"General D. Railer" (certainly the winner for the best name...)

And finally, "Bitten", which if you have seen the topic was actually steamed but was unfortunately involved in a derailment which then caused a cab fire and a melted sight glass

Possibly "Bitten" before it derailed at the bottom of the hill!
You may or may not remember the NWAG speed trials of a few years ago, at the culmination of which we did try to go for Mallards record. We failed, the fastest speed down the now closed PTLR Cross Garden Rail Link being 118 (scale) mph, the loco being an early Peckett that was sold by the Association in the early 80's. Previous attempts with mamods had topped out at 105mph!
