Jane / Janet v Mamod / MSS cab

A very popular starting point for Live Steam. With their low cost comes a number of problems which can be discussed here

Jane / Janet v Mamod / MSS cab

Post by Narrow Minded » Tue Sep 25, 2012 5:53 pm

Just thought I'd ask the assembled guru's for advice on converting a closed to open cab.

I've got an old Jane spec' plate in my bits box so all I need to do is mark out and drill the tank tops to bolt it in place - I'm also thinking of cutting down the existing cab front level with the tanks and side sheets to bolt back in place, adding a little structural rigidity and close off the back of the tanks?

Cutting down a Mamod cab backsheet won't be a problem, but any suggestions as to the best way of fixing it to the loco?
I was thinking of flattening out the bottom "flange" and existing fitting tabs and trying to sandich it between the rear drag beam and the Dream Steam "Narrow Gauge" buffer beams?

Any suggestions gratefully received before I introduce the above parts to Mr Dremel ;)

Hi Greg,

You do not say what type of boiler you are going to fit the IP Jane cab front spectacle plate to. If it is to your No.6 Ogwen then no problem as it is fitted with an after market boiler. If you are fitting it to a standard Mamod SL/MSS boiler then the plate will foul the rear boiler insert and so will need to be mounted a little further forward on the tank tops.

Triming your cab front down to the level of the side tanks is a good idea for rigidity as you say, which the IP Jane lacks, but it does mean the cab front will then be in 2 halfs.

For a shortened cab back if you have not already viewed the postings in Peter Jones' Topic then look here at Page 1 - http://gardenrails.myfreeforum.org/ftop ... -asc-0.php Then have a look at the 2nd posting from the bottom of Page 1 in Lawrence's Topic - http://gardenrails.myfreeforum.org/about6194.html

Hey fella, I've still got those Briggs open cab & rear sheet going for swaps if you want. Going closed cab with tender in new build (eventually).

Here's an offer for Narrow Minded. I have been experimenting with various parts and this is a prototype part. You are welcome to have one sent FOC to try out. It will be sent un-bent. If you are using aftermarket buffer beam and couplings then you will still need to get the drill/Dremel out to modify.

PM me.

What plans do you have in mind for this then PP? Any prototypical inspiration or photos/drawings please? I'm quite curious as closed-cab tender engine oscillators seem to be a rarity :)

Peter,

That is a very kind offer for Greg.

I suspect that your cab back may have been influenced by the one fitted to my later IP Jane!!

I'm sure a few of us would be very interested if you decide to make a batch of these cab backs.

Sorry folks, I've only just caught up with this topic. I have Janet style cab backs which appear not to have been on my list. They are now - at £10 each.
Hope this helps
