Price of S/H mamods and IP Jane?

How much do second hand mamods normally sell for?
Also wondering about what price IP Janes go for?
Thinkig of saving up and see if any come up

I've seen most second hand mamods go on ebay for about £70 odd quid recently, but i'm bound to be corrected on that!

Don't have a clue about Janes though

I think it depends, £70 seems about right I would say, although you can get them for less if your prepared to do a bit of work. If I were you I would go for the Jane, apparentlky they are much better.

For a Jane, I think it's just a case of searching. If you go to any of the shows etc, there's sometimes a couple around cheap. I saw one at Exeter Show last year for 170 quid.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm,,,,,,,,,,,,,thanks for that. Wouldn't mind getting a mamod to mess around with and not be to scaared of messing up.
I have also had thoughs of building loco using mamod parts, mybe with a vertical cylinder like of Regenr Konrads (if thats possibe?)
What do you think?

Very possible. I know of one complete one made with significant re-engineering using all mamod bits with a few hombrew bits.. Belongs to steamyjim I think.

Another is all standard MSS apart from the cylinders wich are a binny steam motor.. the chassis has also been extended. I should be seeing the chap who made this one soon so can get some pictures if you like?

Them pictures would be great. Thought making a loco from mamod bits would be easiest for a first steam build. Have a few ideas in my head.

Seen thats before and thought about it but all the boiler and stuff is form america, and a I would prefer a mamod 9hopefully that didn't sound snobbidsh) since i can do stuff to it with out worry about toatally runining it.

How about just buying a chassis/boiler from say accucarft and playing around with it. For example length, wheel configuration etc and fitting your own body work.

It's money really, I am more likley to get some mamod stuff than Accucraft stuff, but good sugestion.

A Jane would be cheaper than getting a Mamod to run to the same standards. I don't know how much experience with steam you have, mamods tend not to be the best running locos in the world anyway and unless your experienced, home built locos tend not to be as good as those made by experts either... Now, I know you have to start learning somewhere but I suspect that inexperienced builder + mamod components + scratchbuilding = dissapointment when it doesn't work very well.

If you want to tinker, get an old mamod and slowly rebuild it with bits and bobs from dream steam etc- that way the cost is spread out, you'll learn lots, and there's a good chance you'll get a decent running engine at the end of it. After that, you could look at making your own from mamod- esque components, and you'd have a good chance of getting it working.

If you want to run, save your pennies and get a SH Jane.

Well I'd prefer to tinker with mamod, something I wouldn't be scared of recking to much. Could repaint/try and line add bits and enjoy. I like that option (thanks

). Although I'd still like to build a loco from mamod parts, to keep me occupied and just to learn. Also find it interesting and don't care if it didn't work (rebuild it to a more standard looking mamod.)
I also would like a Jane or Janet, like the appearence, but that might hve to wait.

Easy to make a Mamod look like a Jane, a simple matter of building a new spectacle plate! If you are happy to tinker and fiddle- swap the cylinders, fit a regulator and lubricator etc, get a Mamod. As you say, cheap enough not to be a worry.

Then, with the knowledge gained from that, build your own from bits and bobs

If you are more interested in doing cosmetic mods, I'd get a Jane or pre- modified Mamod though as it'll run better that way.

I'll do that then. I want to do all work on a mamod, not just cosmetic. Might make one look like a Jane, and try a hand at a repaint.

Now just need to get a cheap mamod

Also what type of paint would be required to repaint side tanks and bodywork on a mamod?
