I shouldn't worry about down sizing gardens! In my old garden I had a scale mile or so of gauge one track. Now look what I have- a glorified shelf in a postage stamp garden that I am not allowed to extend yet
I think that smaller railways have the potential for greater detail and atmosphere although someone's bound to correct me on this!!!

The railway which people forgot

Well i experimented with a mix
1 Part cement
4 1/2 part sharp sand
1 part compost (with large bits removed)
Water to a mortar consistancy maybe a little wetter ( but not too wet ! )
Then i use disposable plastic gloves to apply it to the track patting it to get it to move into every bit (when you patt it it will apear to gett wettter dont worry )
then using a Mid soft brush ( i use a brush off a dustpan and brush ) and brush it until you can see sleepers and making sure edges of rails are clear for flanges

Thanks for that. Sounds like a variation on the good old "Rowlands Mix" - exactly what I intend doing actually
I'm fed up with trying to get gravel that looks anything like true to scale (especially in photo's - it's not too bad using the 2 metre rule) that the Blackbirds and Dunnocks don't throw all over the place!
Should be nice and easy to clear for a running session for us ground level line gang too

Top Tip for cat deterrent:- save some old teabags and let 'em dry out. Meanwhile get a small bottle of "Olbas Oil" and then put several drops on each of the teabags.
Place the Olbas soaked teabags in the cat sensitive areas and they should stay away.
It works for me with our cat and the neighbours felines which invade the garden and it's a cheap and easy solution to try
