I always thought it to be the other way around.Keith&Joanna wrote:I have to tend to agree with the price point issue too, for an average Accucraft Model (usa) like a K27 you can buy an entry level 5" Live steam locomotive, its not relative. I do agree that the Edrig should not have been discontinued. Its a cracking entry level model with tons of potential for mods and add ons.
There does also seem to be more "Oh Jees You Can't Run A L&BR Goods Van Behind An Australian Steam Engine" in this scale than in 00 gauge for instance. If i want to put a rake of chocolate n cream MK1's behind a double header of RES liveried class 47's no one bats an eye, maybe because in this country we have a great following of enthusiasts and those who like to run and preserve. These people dont seem to be as common in G scale.
Probably the same people who think Mamods aren't worthy of any recognition.

The fact that I have (up untill now) not been allowed to build my railway in the garden... Instead on shelves. I dislike the cheque book modelling and snobery of gauge 1 (why I originally moved to 16mm scale) oh and when stuff breaks having to further fix or shell out for it.
I really dont like the LGB sound and colours. Also my grandad's leave it as factory condition never modify attitude (he is a collector)

Yes, that is why I find Gauge 1 to be fairly 'closed shop'. Although I must thank one of the guys at Amberley who does Gauge 1 as he gave me a spare G1MRA 2010 calendar which is very good quality.Mr. Bond of the DVLR wrote:The fact that I have (up untill now) not been allowed to build my railway in the garden... Many Guage 1ers are very nice people- my firend David builds all his locos out of scrap and they run beutifully too. Just the impression I got was that you have to have alot of money or skill. Of cource mainline trains blasting round with full length carriages are brilliantly spectacular but the attitude that goes with them in general is what I do not like.

Wind when your trying to set fire to an engine...
How an engine stops when your trying to film it.
any plant im allergic to that appears right by the lineside...
Nothing I like is available, or if it is its hideously prices and has dodges i cant accept it for.
that feeling, when youve forgot to buy gas and its a sunday...
Batteries- just batteries
One for kes... BAMBOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! sam should second this when he comes out of hibernation
But I enjoy the hobby to much to give up

I could tell that you didn't like bamboo by the way you were putting so much enthusiasm into ripping it outAdam R wrote:

Snobbery - to me anyone who really loves what they do - be it running £4,000s' worth of engine or £2.50s' worth of motor, chassis, blutack & cardboard are alright be me

That's quite interesting - Derek Wiggins was saying something similar in SMT but it's not completely dead - you only have to look at the Gordon Diplock entries and Charles Firth's Massage Coach to see that!kes wrote:happily seems a very rare thing in 16mm, most are just as potty as I am - er I mean share the same sense of humour

cats, especially around newly dug earthworks.
how one loco in particular will derail at a point others will negotiate with ease.
fiddly three link couplings.
never having enough ballast.
snobs who don't appreciate the beautiful simplicity and operational ease of a geared tram based on a mamod stationary.
the massive gaps in between LGB check and running rails on points (though this is cheaply rectified).
phew I think thats about it.
oh no, hang on....
....the price of nice engines! As much as I like my stationaries on wheels, I would like an engine with fixed cylinders!

Winters so cold that your points and loco gas tank freeze and prevent you running steam in the cold!
Other than that I find it quite hard to find things I really 'hate' in our hobby. I do agree that prices are high for a lot of things, but you have to look on many of them as an investment. Most things will serve you well for many years and often either accumulate in value or be at least worth what you paid for them.
I nearly had to sit down for a breather when I saw how much a 2nd hand Brandbright passenger railcar was going for at Stoneleigh. I built mine from a kit in 1991. It was a lot of money to me then - taking up my Christmas present fund and some savings, but it's now worth more than double what I paid for it. I'm not selling it though, it's my favorite lazy item - plonk it down and you have an instant passenger train!
