GRS signal kit

Help needed

Hi all,

I bought the GRS signal kit but can’t make head or tail of the instructions has anyone got any tips of measurements for them since there are none on what appears to be the instructions. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I’m new to kit building in this scale

Can't help directly, other than empathise. GRS kits in general are not noted for their clarity of instructions.

My only observation would be that if the signal is intended to be used on a narrow gauge line, then you can specify your own dimensions. If you take a look at some of the photos online of, say, the IoM and Irish Ng signals they seem to come in all sorts of shapes and sizes.

Hi,
my railway is 16mm narrow gauge with 45mm track.
I will give the signal a go is there a general loading gauge since I wanna make sure the signal is tall enough not to foul any locos that could visit in future.

Unfortunately, there are only wheel standards shown on the 16mm Association website.

I'm sure more than one person on here would be happy to suggest loading gauge dimensions based on the largest stock on their railways. I'd do so myself but I'm not at home at the moment.

Always sensible to plan ahead just in case someone like me should drop in with an Emett style locomotive which is 32cm tall. On second thoughts, I doubt I will be joining you as I notice you run on 45mm gauge and I'm on 32. Also, West Wales is far enough away to spare you any random visits.
Good luck with the signal, it looks like a comprehensive kit.

Not entirely relevant but might be of interest. Whilst at the East Kiln Light Railway on Sunday, I picked up a copy of Ernest Carter's Model Railway Encyclopedia which includes this drawing.

If its of any help, the brackets on my 3-way are 170mm to underside from rail level, but I'm using 16mm on 32mm track. There might be some food for thought on my build thread:

Of course, the One True Way, of modelling narrow gauge on 45mm track, is Manx 15mm to the foot.

These two operated on the 1951 Festival of Britain passenger carrying line, Far Tottering and Oystercreek Railway and were designed by Rowland Emett. These are scratch-built and battery operated...

I doubt you will see them near your line but there is a video of some of my Emett models working on my line...
