Deltang RC issues

Post by Lonsdaler » Thu Jul 24, 2025 8:54 am

I've been using Deltang rc gear for some 7-8 years now, with a TX22 controller, and various receivers - rx102 in a steamer, and a couple of rx65 variants in battery locos.
However, I have started having issues with 2 locos suddenly developing a mind of their own, resulting in the need to resort to a rapid 'hand of god' intervention to prevent disaster.
I presume I have developed an issue with channel interference, but should I be looking at the rx or the tx? I bought an RCTrains pre-made transmitter to replace my self build tx, but it doesn't seem to have helped.
I'd appreciate any wisdom about how to fault find effectively or even details of how others (if there are others) have dealt with similar issus.
At the moment, running either of the locos concerned is not a relaxing experience!
Thanks for any help anyone may be prepared to offer.
Phil

Totally non-scientific and rather vague reply, but I had problems with a similar setup - Rx 65b and kitbuilt Tx22. It turned out that the Rx was knackered and the Tx was long in the tooth and a bit iffy. I ended up binning the Rx and replacing the Tx with the uptodate Micron equivalent.

Which locos are having problems, the steamer, or the battery locos.?

I use a couple of RCS Tx variants that contain Deltang Tx modules. They've never caused any issues. I don't have any Rx65.

The only times I've had issues with steam locos was caused by a couple of non Deltang Rx that lost the plot and went into failsafe when they went out of reception range. They were replaced with Rx102 type.

I've had issues with a couple of battery locos that used an ESC with an Rx102. That was traced to electrical noise from the motors and an ESC brand that was sensitive to electrical noise. The permanent fix was to replace the motor (a new motor cost less than a new ESC).

Graeme

Yes, Graeme beat me to it. Are the problems specific to the Rx65s or the Rx102s?

Another question is, have you or your neighbours bought a new Broadband router recently? I did come across someone whose WiFi was interfering with their Deltang gear.

When did you buy the transmitter? - Does it have the newer 'silver' power switch?

Can you see what the indicator LED on the receiver is doing when you loose control?

I think Phil is trying to ascertain if it's one of my transmitters or one of his.

The age, so I can judge if it is Deltang or Micron-based..

I also made many with the red power button..

My apologies continue; I've had to put sorting this out onto a backburner. Life, etc.
Phil, to answer your question, the transmitter I purchased from you has a red power button, not a 'silver' one.
I hope to be able to get back onto this next month🙄
Meanwhile, my manual Regner locos have been getting more use when I visit neighbouring garden railways.
EDIT: I've changed 'Blackburn error' to backburner, as it should have been. Why is it called autocorrect? It rarely is.

That's OK, life gets in the way of playing trains. :dontknow:

If your transmitter has the red power-button, it is several years old, and will have a Deltang transmitter module within.

I still have a handful (small-hand now) of these modules, so if that is the problem, it can be swapped. - The new Micron modules, are different enough to make replacement with one of those not economical, unfortunately.

If you are visiting the Llanfair Garden Railway show (Saturday 30th August) you could bring it with you?
I could have a quick look, depending how busy we are, and take it away for repair, if necessary.

Hi Phil,
Sorry, but I didn't make it to Llangollen, I hope you had a good show.
Well, I've established that I'm having issues whether I use my self build RX22 or the 'newer' one I purchased from you, so I think the fault appears to lie with the receivers in both engines concerned (a newer Micron derived Rx seems to be unaffected). At least one of the Rx's predates Rik setting up RC Trains, let alone since you purchased the company! So I think age is playing a part.
So it looks like I need to upgrade my radio control; a great pity as I really was a fan of the Deltang stuff.😪
Thanks again for trying to help me establish the issue

It sounds like you may need new receivers?

It sounds (if working with a newer receiver) as if they have 'aged'. - It sounds as if your transmtters are fine?

Do you want to try a couple of receivers, sale or return?
