The Two Dogs Mining Company
Re: The Two Dogs Mining Company
Today being a holiday I picked up some lumber to rip on the table saw. Hot & humid as Hades here... but fifteen minutes later it was completed though I was bathed in sweat and sawdust.
These will be used to construct the new switches as most of the old units ended up having their ties lost when I pulled them up from the previous layout. I hadn't treated those previous ties so the lifespan was good for only a few years.
Once the turnouts are built they'll be immersed in the treatment solution that I now use for ties which is a cocktail of used motor oil and diesel fuel.

Looking forward to seeing your trackwork, Dwayne. I always marvel at how quickly you can turn out, well, .... turnouts....

Re: The Two Dogs Mining Company
Watching progress Dwayne but can't help but notice your recent picture of June 11th includes only one dog, do we need to assume the Two Dogs Mining Co. is due for a rename? I hope I'm wrong!
It seemed, from earlier pictures, that the grey dog appeared older, and possibly partially sighted.

Re: The Two Dogs Mining Company
@Rik... thanks. I'll be needing four left hand and three right hand switches. Should be getting a start tomorrow on these new switches.
@Peter... the older, grey pup is Maggie. She is alive and well. She's about twelve and mostly deaf now. Her eye sight is a bit diminished but she can still spot the squirrels that call the yard home. Age of course has slowly seen her being a bit stiff after napping. But all in all, she's in good shape. βΊ

Thanks Dwayne, I'm pleased to hear she is still keeping you company.

Re: The Two Dogs Mining Company
The girls do me good now that I'm a bachelor. Having said that, when they are both gone there won't be any more pups in my life. My future plans when I hopefully retire in six years are to spend summers traveling around Alaska and Canada (where most of my family still lives). I'd also like to travel further abroad on this spinning rock from time to time... Europe, Asia, S. America, Russia.
Re: The Two Dogs Mining Company
Alrighty then... spent some time fussing with the first of three right-hand switches. Temporary test fitting in the photo.
Previous switches were of blade design. In keeping with the mining theme of the new layout these will be of 'stub' design.

Hi Dwayne,
Nice work again. I like the stub point idea. It's a good start. You're making better progress than my current turnout build - it's been on the bench for well over a month now! I'm looking forward to seeing your track start to grow on the new railway.
All the best,
Andrew

"Smith! Why do you only come to work four days a week?
"'cause I can't manage on three gaffer!"

Re: The Two Dogs Mining Company
Thanks Andrew. I've knocked out three over the past three evenings. The goal is to do one each evening.

Re: The Two Dogs Mining Company
Excellent! You've already surpassed my turnout making total ..... well actually you surpassed it on the first evening!!!
One day, I will have to have a go. I've always fancied trying to make some dual gauge pointwork. But maybe I should start with something simpler....

There's satisfaction in building your own. It's not that difficult.
Re: The Two Dogs Mining Company
That's what all the experts say ....... Which is presumably why they are experts

Re: The Two Dogs Mining Company
Expert needed here also Rik..
Dwayne I am in envy of your turnout build. It a joy to see. Can I ask, is the rail bender made from wheels. It is a brilliant well made item. I am thinking if they are turned upside down they could be used for pipe bending.
Those machines are a tad expensive.
PS I am not getting notifications again. It's not just from yours either...

Re: The Two Dogs Mining Company
Rod, here are two photos of my railbender. It was built by a late friend of mine who was a machinist. He machined the rollers to work with the code 250 rail I use. Each roller rides on bearings for smooth rotation. It is a great machine.

Re: The Two Dogs Mining Company
Excuse my ignorance, but how does your stub point work?
I can see that the converging end must move by a few mm to allow the rails to line up for each of the diverging and straight routes.
Does that mean there is some 'pivot' point up at the other ( divergent) end? If so, does that mean the whole point is screwed down to a 'baseboard' at that end?
Are there rail joiners on the 4 rails at that end?
A pic of one installed would probably answer all my questions.

Re: The Two Dogs Mining Company
Your late friend did a superb job with it Dwayne. Very impressed. Now I need to find someone to make me one. I would have done myself, but I don't have the machinery anymore.

Re: The Two Dogs Mining Company
Greg... these are the primary component of a stub switch. The rails that lead into the switch that move side to side will be installed when the switch is positioned in place. It'll be a bit before I actually begin laying track because of the weather.
Two Dogs Mining Company Declares Bankruptcy
Times are tough and the latest news here is that the Two Dogs Mining Company has gone bankrupt before one foot of track was able to be laid.

The real story is that with the recent enactment of masks mandates here in OKC on July 20 for the fake virus, my employer had instituted the requirement that all employees must wear a mask.
As former USAF military cop and supporter of the US Constitution and the Natural Rights of being a free man... I refused to comply. The resulting action being that I was left with little choice but to quit.
With enough funds in my bank account to tide me over for a few months I have been taking it easy with an abundance of spare time on my hands.
A day or so later I was looking over the layout with a critical eye. And came to the conclusion that what I had thus far constructed wasn't working for me. And began the process of dismantling the layout. I'm getting good at this it seems.
What does the future hold?
Well, aside from finding another job once September arrives and the lifting of the unconstitutional mask mandate by the mayor and his control freak city council minions... I will build a layout come hell or high water.
I'm going to chill for a week or two now that the layout has been dismantled. I need to polish my employment resume and start the process of hunting a new job in the coming weeks while giving some thought to what to do about having a layout.
Stay tuned...

The right decision should never be controlled by the "man" over the next couple of months start a new job as a garden railway engineer and build your layout until something new and deserving of your skills comes along
