Garden bench
Garden bench
Sort of railway related, as I can sit there with a cuppa watching the trains pass by.
I decided a two seater bench seat would just fit the space outside my workshop and be a good spot for taking a breather during running sessions. I tracked one down on't'internet and ordered it - only to discover the delivery date was 16th July!!
I then noticed my neighbour had a couple of used pallets on his front lawn after having had some paving slabs delivered. He was quite relieved to donate them to a good cause - particularly as the refuse tips around here are still not yet open.
Half a day's work with jemmy, claw hammer, saw and screwdriver combined with a couple of old 3" square fence posts and I had something looking vaguely bench-like. .
A bit of sanding down and some tweaking with the jig-saw plus a couple of coats of Cuprinol outdoor paint (£10), and even the Missus likes it! .
OK - it may not be as durable as a hardwood version - but it has cost considerably less and is immediately available for the supposed heat wave next week!

Re: Garden bench
Rik, certainly "food for thought", a lot of us have a pallet lying around somewhere.

Re: Garden bench
Top re-cycling there, and a beautiful structure too!
It will probably outlive the 'professional' ones as long as you coat it with that lovely coloured preservative.
If you can put something waterproof under the legs to prevent it standing in water it will last even longer...... try upholstery pins or something domed.

Re: Garden bench
I'm very impressed with that Rik.
Those blue pallets seem to have some superior sort of preservative (I think that's why they say they shouldn't be used as 'stove fodder'). I've had one outside round the back of the allotment shed for a couple of years and it's as good as the day I put it there. I seriously thought about using it as the basis for a shed extension. That, combined with your preservative should guarantee a reasonable life for your masterpiece.

"Smith! Why do you only come to work four days a week?
"'cause I can't manage on three gaffer!"

Re: Garden bench
Very nice Rik, and the artisitic flourishes with jigsaw and paint transform it from the mundane. Excellent upcycling

Re: Garden bench
That's fantastic!
Our log store's made out of old pallets, but I might look out for some more for a bench...
Thanks for the inspiration,
Andrew.
