Semi-scale BR: a GWR mogul, kind of…

Post by BertieB » Thu Jul 12, 2018 9:28 pm

It's the parallel universe where British Railways seems to have been 3'11" gauge, again - with some sort of smaller GWR mogul, with inside-cylinders (!?) and other untypical GWR features.

Well, really it's just an attempt to put a more agreeable body on a Bachmann Large Scale 'James' chassis: mainly in plasticard with some GRS and Walsall fittings. Had to grow the tender (using some of the bits) too, as the original is (also) a bit short.

Not quite finished: glazing; crew I suppose; and so on. But that’ll have to wait till I get some.

Close scrutiny probably best avoided – it should be seen on the move from, inevitably, a ‘reasonable distance’. Which is the whole basis of my garden railway, anyway: sitting under the tree with a can of Old Dirigible as, hopefully, approximately plausible looking stuff trundles past...

Probably the best angle. Have to make sure I'm sat in the right place

I like it, all the best locos are black

Can the wheels and rods be chemically blackened?

Good idea. Don't know anything about it though. What would you recommend?

Rods are bendy plastic and I suppose could be painted.

She's a beauty... no reason why you shouldn't narrow gauge a standard gauge loco, works well in my opinion.
The best things in life are free.... so why am I doing this?

Thank you. When I started doing this sort of thing (completely unaware of Gauges 1 and 3) it never crossed my mind that the railway should appear to be anything other than UK mainline - you know, like Hornby or the Southern Region.

Hold fire, I think the wheels are nickel chrome plated so you can't do anything with chemicals.

Oh well, Ta. I suppose I've had at the back of my mind to paint the wheels - but on the other hand, when it's on the move I'm not sure you notice much below the running plate beyond the rods, which are sort of hypnotic, of course.

It's an improvement on all Swindon built GWR locos. Lol.

Nice bit of modelling.

That is a tidy build, I like the lining is hand applied or tape?

Looks pretty damn good to me. If you hadn't mentioned it, I wouldn't be aware of the compromise over gauge.

Er, Thank you, but - Strewth! You're sticking your neck out a bit there. Watch out!

Ta. I do the lining, cycling lions and the rest in Photoshop and use an inkjet printer to print on to DIY waterslide decal paper.

Different printers, inks or brands of decal paper can produce quite different results and it can take a fair bit of farting about to get a decent colour match, often followed by laborious manual touching up after application. Worth the effort though, I reckon.

I'm afraid that one's still in pre-production...

Thank you all for your kind comments.

Very smartly turned out Mogul. I like 2-6-0's. I still like your Leader best though!

Here it is, I have to say, struggling to pull a train round the garden.

It's quite high geared, presumably because it has larger wheels than most G-scale motor blocks, and I haven't yet stuck enormous lumps of lead over the driving wheels, which I normally do. Electrical pick-up is only through the driving wheels (and the centre pair are flangeless) which means, I suppose, that the track (which is far from level) has to be scrupulously clean too.

Ho hum.

UPDATE Experiments suggest problem is lack of weight over driving wheels. Lumps of lead to follow.

That's brilliant! From that angle you've really captured the GWR family look - and the paint finish is superb!

I'm intrigued by the whole semi scale thing - I've yet to tackle rolling stock for my indoor chocolate factory line, but that's 32mm to a sort of Faller E-train/Playmobil scale (G-ish?), so representing maybe 2'6"? Given that some stuff on that gauge is the same size as 3' gauge stuff, and that some of that's as big as UK standard gauge, I reckon i'll be able to tweak things to make a small SG Sentinel and 4 wheel vans look more or less right...

Anyway, loving your work and looking forward to seeing more...

Andrew.

Now a challenging 5min YouTube video, largely featuring this loco, embedded in the video forum, 'BR Semi-scale...'

My only criticism is that you are too damning of your own creativity. These models are fantastic!

That was a long time ago, I was young and reckless.

interestingly, I know you mentioned the boiler isn't tapered. I believe the original GWR Badminton class and Aberdare class had straight boilers. In fact your engine has a resemblance to the original Aberdare class, but with a different tender and inside frames.

My only other criticism is that you've inspired me to want to make a J27 in a similar vein but I have no money and a thousand other modelling projects on the go.
