Judging by Gloucestershire roads you need to lay them first and then dig up again for utilities so never say never on lighting.... :D

Those street level shots give a good impression of how it will look when finished. Very atmospheric.

Psst.... Don't forget to install a ladder so that the residents can get up to the Railway Hotel!
Looking at the pictures it reminds me of Venice so perhaps I should just flood the roads instead and use water traffic to access the buildings!

Quite some time ago I bought large (32" x 14") casting from Cain with the possible intention of using it as castle walling, that didn't happen but today's jobs saw the casting being utilised as retaining walls alongside my roads through the village. I managed to create a quite convincing effect using a small angle grinder by marking out coping stones and cutting stone effect on the rear where it will be visible. The single sheet was cut into three sections with my large angle grinder (very tough material making lots of noise and dust). This shows the process.....

They will be cemented in position before any road surface is applied which will be fairly thick but undulating through the village allowing for any water to be directed towards the drainage pipes I am about to install...

Clever use of the retaining walls. I was wondering how you were going to manage drainage. I'd assumed it would have been to arrange a gentle slope through the whole village. I should have realised you'd opt for a more sophisticated system. :D

Wow, this is looking great! I love the thought that's going in to making the village look right, like it's grown gradually over a real landscape rather than being arranged in neat lines on a billiard table. I'm looking forward to seeing the roads unify it all into a single design, it'll look fantastic...

All the best,

Andrew.

A small move in the right direction today.... the drainage pipes have been sited so that the inlet, which will have drain grilles fitted, are placed where they will be in the road gutters. There is a slight fall so the pipes will drain and hopefully not block with leaves etc. It might not be easy to tell from the pictures but there is still a lot of building-up to achieve the correct road level, I never imagined making a model railway would involve so much shovelling! Perhaps it's an age thing and it's catching up with me?

The next shows a little of the foundation work to hold the walling and drainage pipe. This area will have a dirt track behind and alongside the Chapel (joining the High Street through the gap in the walling) which is the access lane to the milk-churn loading stage alongside the line. Also a garden belonging to the crossing keeper's cottage will be sited here. Well, that's the plan!....

If they clog use compressed air to clear.

Keep 'em coming please, Peter.

Actually, the most impressive feature is that you take the full size wheelbarrow on the track and that the lineside fencing survives!

It wasn't until I re-read the post I noticed the wheelbarrow was still there. I hoped no-one would think I was being careless about my railway but it was the nearest location to where I needed the cement or risk dripping dollops of the stuff everywhere.
There might be a short intermission as I have just heard from Cain who has no stock of the casting I need to continue. I think I can take a short break and shovel something else for a change!

This is brilliant. Even the drainage system is going to be a functioning miniature work of art!

Loving this build, it really is taking garden railways to a whole new level.

PS If you need a rat for your drain there was one scuttling along my railway yesterday...

We (like all households) have rats visit us, some people are less aware of their presence but ours are soon dispatched before they get a chance to multiply.

Living in an urban area next to some woodland we have all sorts of rodents in our vicinity. They rarely bother us though, but we do come across them from time to time.
