IP MoD wagon sizes

Post by JMORG » Mon Jun 11, 2018 3:37 pm

Hi guys,
I have an IP MoD van and brake and I was looking at potentially acquiring a few more MoD wagons to form a typical preservation works train. Just wondering how scale they are, they seem big to me but a photo of Countess in the 60's with an ex MoD brake show's that it's not far off...
Advice?

To see how scale they are, have a look in SMT 111 which has highly accurate drawings of all the MoD stock in. I haven't compared them personally but from memory the brake van does look rather big.

SMT 111? Sorry can you elaborate on what that is. I've a passing interest in MoD vehicles also but i'm sure the van on the TR and IP Engineering's somewhat shrunk down version is too big for my railway's loading gauge.
Actually does anyone have any particular book recommendations on the MoD? I'm trying to work out how they and a civilian railway might cooperate in terms of transporting explosives, munitions and general materials from a main line to their site at the far end of a narrow gauge network.

I'll have to have a look! The one box van will need a repaint due to previous damage so I might detail it at this stage to make it more correct.

16mm Today - the quarterly association mag.

It's up to issue 158 so issue 111 must be around... 2006? Certainly before I joined!

if you go to the association website https://www.16mm.org.uk/publications/16 ... k-numbers/ you should be able to get that issue for £3 plus p&p, although it may be a photocopy.

Found SMT111; definitely not scale! Probably closer to 1/12 scale...
