HGLW - Loco build and rc installation
HGLW - Loco build and rc installation
As promised in this thread - https://gardenrails.org/forum/viewtopic ... 83#p135568 - I have constructed a simple loco and installed Deltang r/c equipment, hopefully to show how easy it can be. At the moment, I have only made a short video but I aim to have the blog entry finished by the end of the weekend.
I wanted to see how far I could get in a day - actually, less than a day as I didn't start work on her until about 11.00am. I was intending to build an IP Engineering kit, but it hasn't arrived and so I've had a go at a Houstoun Gate Loco Works kit instead. (http://www.eagleassist.com/hglw/Locos.html)
Still need to do a bit more detailing and give her a decent paint job, but at least she's a runner!

Re: HGLW - Loco build and rc installation
Lovely loco. It gives me great pleasure to see these are still being sold and built
Re: HGLW - Loco build and rc installation
Great work Rik.
I'll have a look at the blog when it's ready. I'm looking out for another locomotive and this will go on my short list.

Looks good Rik, and thanks for the blog post.
It looks as though it might be a wee bit light to get much haulage, though?
Also, I realise that you've just built it 'as delivered', but I wonder low long that drive belt will last without stretching and slipping? I think I'd have preferred a delrin chain and gears?

I think this is just to demonstrate the install of Deltang R/C Phil not be a main line worker day in day out.

I've got another HGLW loco with a drive belt which I've had for about four years now (and she was secondhand). So far no slippage evident.
She's only going to potter around the timber yard and so will only be used for light shunting duties.

Looks awesome Rik! Thanks for making this.
"So what's yer name?" asked the driver.
"Charlie, sir."
"I don't address my firemen by their Christian names, son. Give me your surname."
"Darling, sir."
"Okay, Charlie, start shoveling."

Re: HGLW - Loco build and rc installation
Thanks. I was scanning the internet for suitable prototypes and decided Peldon at Amberley could be my inspiration. By coincidence, I've just seen Tom's thread mentioning Peldon is the inspiration for his Cricket refurb.
I think I can get away with it - Peldon was built in 1936 and my railway is set in 1932. My explanation is that my loco was an earlier experimental version which explains the constructional divergencies ....
Some nice historical significance for me as well. Peldon was used in the construction of the Abberton Reservoir which I used to cycle past on my way to Mersea Island as a kid.

Re: HGLW - Loco build and rc installation
Your wish is my command, Mitch. She's now emerged from the paint-shop and had a few more details added - couplings (yes, I know LGB couplings look $#!t , but they make shunting a lot easier - and they are comparatively cheap), buffers (courtesy of Binney Engineering), radiator and grille (you can just make out the vertical tubes of the radiator behind the grille), exhaust pipe (a la Peldon - ie bits of copper tube and plastic rod), hand rails (bent brass rod and a couple of washers) and a driver (Jon's People).
. . . . Will do a bit more detailing (eg inside the cab), add some nameplates and a number, do some weathering (I don't do ex-works pristine on my railway) and then she can enter service to potter around the sidings at the sawmill.

Wow.
Fantastic job Rik. You should be on commission with HGLW. I reckon their sales will go up now.
Such a quick build too.

Re: HGLW - Loco build and rc installation
Just a suggestion for future. Instead of using LGB hooks on a small loco, I just arranged the 'cowcatcher' (or whatever that front plate is called) to be the right height above rail, so the hook engaged under it.

Re: HGLW - Loco build and rc installation
Interesting idea, Greg. I've considered ways of retaining the reliability but reducing the visual impact - eg by making the loop out of wire or brass strip and relying on the centre buffer for the push. But some of the curves on my railway are quite tight and so I'd end up with the dreaded buffer-lock.

Re: HGLW - Loco build and rc installation
Hi folks
The weekend weather afforded an opportunity to get out into the garden. Thought I'd give HGLW (temporary name) a chance to strut her stuff. Adds an extra dimension to shunting operations at Peckforton station. A few minor tweaks needed - a bit more weight and I need to widen the back-to-backs as she can slip down where the track gauge widens on some points to accommodate the point blades (see if you can spot her doing a neat little curtsey). Otherwise, pleased to see how well she performs.

Very nicely done Rik, low angle shots make all the difference to the scene.
The best things in life are free.... so why am I doing this?
Re: HGLW - Loco build and rc installation
Second that Rik, the low angle makes you feel has if your'e really there.
