When I spent a good quarter of an hour in the supermarket this afternoon evaluating caps on bottles for their potential as steam domes.

Been there, done that. Still can't get out of the habit now. Whereas before, I was looking for something specific, now I look - just in case!

Me too... a very fancy and even more very expensive perfume bottle cap ( the wife's not mine!) was perfect for a chimney pot on my thatched cottage.

Now if somebody can just find me a bottle top that looks like a Manning Wardle chimney....?

There was a particular brand of tea tree oil deodorant I used to buy that had a wonderful steam dome like cap.  Unfortunately they changed the design of the container and the cap is now entirely different and quite unsuitable.  Fortunately though I was wise enough to save the caps off the old bottles so I shouldn't run out any time soon.

The dome on your Manning Wardle looks just the job Rik.  I don't think anyone could guess its origin ;)

So did you get into trouble for 'borrowing' that perfume bottle cap Phillip?

I've done the same........................ I have to wear a partial denture, which needs keeping clean with tablets that come in a long tube............. which convert nicely into model iron pipes!

I take my stock to exhibition and invite people to take them away...........

I've also collected numerous little jam jars which they give out in afternoon teas and breakfast on the train - I've got enough to see me out, so the surplus will be going with the iron pipes to Peterborough, for anyone who wants to store their little bits!

I have ended up with a little box full of miscellaneous caps and so on which 'might just come in handy...' I also need to find my crimping roller as I need to start converting beer cans into corrugated sheet for a roofing job.

No wonder people think we are nuts.

Do you mean to say that you don't look at cans of beans oe vegetables to see whether they'll do the job? I've got a stash somewhere under my workbench, just in case................ (You heat them up with a blowlamp to get rid of the coatings, then they rust beautifully!)

Very few bean tins pass through this house. Veg. tends to be fresh or frozen, and I tend to make most of the soup.

I used to buy sweet corn because the tins were right!

That must be the only reason to buy sweetcorn!
You have entered yourself into the 'club' by this sad admission.
