Loco Nameplate size?

Hello,

I'm looking to purchase a set of 16mm scale locomotive name plates from Narrow Planet.

Unfortunately, loco name plates were not a common practice here in New Zealand (yes, there were a few exceptions) so I have no handy locos to measure from.

I was therefore wondering what the size (particularly height in inches) of an "average" Real Life locomotive name plate might be?

I don't have any official information, but I have observed that most name plates are just about the same size as the name itself, plus about three quarters of an inch on either end.

I know the Lynton and Barnstaple loco name plates were about 6 inches high.

You don't say if you're modelling a particular prototype, if not then whatever looks right is right. These are Narrow Planet plates I had made for my Roundhouse Alco. They are 8mm high (i.e. 6 inches in the real world). To me they look right for a medium size loco. You might want to go slightly smaller if you're putting a very long name on a very short loco !
