Bye bye InterCity 125

Post by tom_tom_go » Mon Mar 16, 2015 4:36 pm

If the interior of the replacement Hitachi Class 800 Super Express is anything like the Javelins they use on HS1 the comfort of BR Mk3 coaches will be missed!

And the bar :)

Nothing quite like the sound of an hst in full flight.

Mixed feelings about this. Good to see fresh investment in the railways but.. The HST feels comfortable and somehow big inside.

The Javelin on the other hand feels ordinary inside and, to be honest, cramped. Maybe it's just because I've only travelled on it when it is packed but the HS1 trains have the feel of a narrow bodied passenger plane.

I'm mortified that virtually all the services from Derby to London are in the hands of (spit) Voyagers - a far inferior product to the HST!

From an educated guess I'd say they'll still be around until 2019. I'll be surprised if they are taken from there anytime before that. Anyhow, they've got another 15 years to go once they finally move to Scotland in 2019/2020, they'll only be 60 years old by then...

Very similar to the A4's who also spent there final days working Scottish express trains. So i think it is a suitable place for these great machines to go they did really revolutionise rail travel just like the A4's and are one of the final examples of exceptional British railway engineering........sob....... ah well i bet a few will be preserved.

Brian, go from Nottingham, the hourly service is an HST and it's EMP, Leicester then right away Pancras. If I have to cab ride the mainline its always the service I choose, although conversation in the cab is impossible above 80!

I've got happy childhood memories of being absolutely awestruck by 125s belting through Biggleswade as we cowered on the platforms, waiting for a stopper to take us home after a trip to our cousins... 125s have never been quite the same since they changed the engines over, the sound used to be fantastic...

I've not been on a Javeliln, but I do hope the replacement 125s aren't like Pendelinos, horrid things. I actually quite like the Voyagers, apart from some very dubious window alignment and that smell that makes one wonder whether the intake port for the air con is situated in the lavatory... Unfortunately I reckon FGW's 125s are among the worst trains out there, far too many airline seats, stupidly high seat backs, horrid harsh lighting, ugh! Cross Country's 125s are lovely - light and bright and welcoming. It's just a shame there's no buffet car. Any Robyn Hitchcock fans out there? "A train isn't a train without a buffet car"...

Anyway, wouldn't it be lovely if they repainted an HST in blue and grey for a while...

Cheers,

Andrew.

i recently had a ride on an hst from kings cross to carlisle, hated every minute of it sadly as the poor thing bounced along terribly, never had that before on one, much prefer the 225's!
