Mamod carriage to Mamod Tram engine.
Hi,
This thread has restarted here because it was started in the wrong section. It was started in the Rolling stock section under the title of Mamod Carriage Conversion.
Its a CMES open day today and in an hour or so I'm off to play trains!
I have taken a couple of photographs which I hope show the way I am thinking.
A bit of an issue with clearance but this is the prototype and rather than getting parts what was in stock has been used.
Hope it doesn't rain!

Are you going to be sticking with a single cylinder?
No it will be a twin cylinder. I didn't think to include the other cylinder in the photograph. With smaller wheels than the Mamod locomotive and the 1.66:1 gear reduction it should travel about half the speed of a locomotive for the same piston speed, it will also be quite heavy so as long as the boiler is up to it the Tram could be quite powerful, certainly for its size.

Why not mount it on top of the boiler and use a chain drive to the wheels like the Regner Vincent?
There isn't enough room under the roof of the Tram locomotive.

Hi,
I did some more work on the chassis today. As it looked at end of play.
I had intended to use the fly cranks left over from altering two Mamod roadsters. But they was a bit of an issue with track clearance.
So it was decided to reduce the stroke from 19mm to 16mm and use disc cranks but a mm or so will have to be removed from their diameter as they only just clear the track.
After making the fly cranks smaller, shortening axles and sorting out where the steam pipes will go the chassis will be ready for a air and steam test.

The buffer beams have been tidied up and a piece of wood fitted into them to work as an insulator when picking the hot model up. Away was figured out as how to connect steam and exhaust pipes to the engine.
The chassis is running on 10psi of air which is the lowest that it will operate at. The flywheels though balanced are a bit small and the aluminium wheels don't have a lot of mass. It should run better on the track, I hope!

Then the more likely way, the other way around, as it gives more space under the small area of footplate.

It has yet to be decided where to put the lubricator, reversing valve and throttle along with their pipe work. This will take some thinking about so as I have to make some safety valves for both this and other boilers that will be the next build. Also the chimney height needs to be checked to see if it will go under 'Rhydypenderyn's' bridge. Also a tray for the Sterno will have to be made.
Tomorrow if the weather is better I hope to play with one of my larger gauge steam engines.

No. 52 of the J&Q is more or less finished. A reversing system has yet to be fitted, the only way that I have come up with given the limited space is underneath and would require a major alteration so I suspect that forward only will be the order of the day! At least for the foreseeable future.
The model has had about an hours running time and is starting to run in. It originally need about 10 psi to getting going which is a little high. So today the chassis was stripped and tweaked a bit and now turns over slowly at 4 psi.
A dead leg lubricator has been fitted. The safety valve now has a shroud. The chimney has been lowered so it will go under the Rhydypenderyn bridge. The plumbing for the chimney has been made so the chimney will act as a condenser/oil separator. Including warming up the Serno will power the model for 10 minutes and use about half the water in the boiler.
Some photographs.
I will need to find some Mamod carriages to modify for it to pull.
A video of it running will follow.
