Can you tell what it is yet?

Been doing a bit of tinkering over the last couple of weeks, can you tell what it is yet?

Perhaps it would help if we had a view from the other end?

Judging by the livery, I'm going for a tamper or some other kind of track-fettling machine? Probably ought to have wasp-stripes on each end though?

Seriously, that's very impressive, especially the tapered boiler...

You are all much cleverer than me with the humour!

Im not even going to try to compete.

But I am impressed.

I know how much effort went into it.

I must confess, I was impressed with the humour too, top class

You are of course right, lots of work gone into this and much more to come.

Another little upgrade, how this will all hang together once printed, well, I have no idea to be honest, lol

Opening spectacles as well! You are getting adept at TinkerCAD

I try, but quite honestly I think you are way ahead of me with Tinkercad. I certainly have issues with doing the dome, I can get it to fit if I print it in pace as I can hide it in with the boiler wrapper. What I want to do is have it as a separate piece and that just isn't working at all. I would like the dome and then have it flare over the boiler for the same amount in each direction. I tried using a "P-Ring" adjusting the wave height, thickness etc etc, but it just won't work :( Something like the brass one below I found online, that flare is a nightmare to get in each direction. If anyone knows how, I would be eternally grateful.

I've not perfected the flare yet. It's a bit of a compromise whichever way I try to do it.

I have no idea how any 3D work is done but I can show the PDF Models domes do have a flare, so it suggests there is a way.

Also, if it helps, this is the way their kit is separated into sections ....

Hi Peter

Yes, that dome is exactly what I am after doing, I would imaging that it requires a better CAD program and a decent CAD person to make it :(

That is pretty much the may I have put mine together, give or take a few bits and bobs here and there, seemed the only logical way to do it

Absolutely staggering what you are both capable of getting TinkerCAD to do. Fascinated to see how this beautiful drawing will translate into a real-world print, the detail is wonderful.

Thanks Simon, as you know, both Rik and I are self taught in Tinkercad with no previous experience, you just learn it as you go along, it is so intuitive

All the parts are designed separately so each part is already printable, the printer is just busy doing a long list of other things at the moment. I have only put them all together in this one piece so I (and you) can see how it fits together and how it should eventually look. Some of it is very painstaking, lol

Out of interest I have just had a go with TinkerCAD, your results look brilliant for what a basic set of tools it gives you.

I haven't seen a good way to do the flare on the dome in TinkerCAD. This is how I would do it in Fusion 360, its very easy, at least when you know how to do it.

It appears TinkerCAD can import STLs, maybe there is a case for doing the dome in another program, exporting it to STL and importing it into your main TinkerCAD document? If you give me the dimensions of the dome and boiler I could send you an STL if you want, as you can see it will only take a minute. ;)

That looks very handy. I do have Fusion 360 so I will give it a go tomorrow. I did use it once to make a curved wheel, took me ages and it looked pants, but I did export it and get it into tinkercad but as its an stl file there isn't much you can do with it.

If I can't follow the YouTube video then I will be asking for help again, lol.

I can't thank you enough for finding that. :salute:

Try getting the the P-Ring the right shape and turning it into a hole around the base of the dome cylinder. Duplicate the P-Ring and move it up 0.25mm, repeat that duplication another dozen or so times. Group all the shapes and you'll get a cylinder with a flare at the base (once you've chopped the top off). You can then add the dome to the top of it.

And that's how you do a flared dome in TinkerCad

Absolutely amazing what you can do with a bit of help, thank you so so much
