Re: 3 D Printing 16mm models
I've been twiddling the 'ironing' settings in Cura, so that might have made a bit of a difference. I'm still finding it a bit hit and miss though.philipy wrote: ↑Thu Dec 03, 2020 8:37 am Just out of interest I left a side printing overnight, using your stl and 0.1 layer height and this is the result this morning: ( I used black because that was the tag end of a reel that was already on the machine and I want to use it up)
Clearly not as good quality as yours but I don't know how much of that is due to slicer settings and how much is inherant difference between printers. I suspect a bit of both.

I'm glad you're finding my scribblings helpful. I'm just working on a more detailed post showing how I drew and constructed a Southwold Open wagon.SimonWood wrote: ↑Thu Dec 03, 2020 11:22 amThis is a really useful and clear tutorial for a 3D printing newbie like me - thanks!ge_rik wrote: ↑Wed Dec 02, 2020 7:11 pm I've now blogged the drawing and the construction of my short wheelbase Southwold van.

You bet I do, just as soon as I get my printer!I've also uploaded the drawings to Thingiverse if you fancy having a go at it yourself

Rik, read the blog, and found it very useful, and at the beginning you mention the sub £80.00 printer, however is that the printer you have used for this wagon.ge_rik wrote: ↑Thu Dec 03, 2020 2:21 pmI'm glad you're finding my scribblings helpful. The dark grey parts were printed on it and the light grey parts were printed on my Eryone Thinker SE

I'm loving both the Phaeton and the Southwold van, the latter being a favourite prototype of mine, and the basis of an early scratchbuild a very long time ago...
Ruby, I've very much enjoyed seeing your models too - I look forward to seeing many more on the new 3D thread...
Andrew.

Re: 3 D Printing 16mm models
My version of Cura is customised by Qidi and there is only ironing on or off, so I can't fiddle with it, unfortunately. In fact I'm still using an old version of the QidiPrint because in subequent versions thye disabled it completely, don't know why.

I have completed the carriage wagon.
And here it is with the carriage on it. The carriage is just primed - run out of paint until the post arrives on Wednesday:
and it fits within the loading gauge. So this sort of carriage would have gone through the tunnels with its roof down!

Thats brilliant Trevor, what will the final colour be. Red would look good with gold trip maybe.

That does look impressive. Something else for the todo list after I've sorted out the Southwold coach(es)...

Re: 3 D Printing 16mm models
Well colour. I am using the airbrush. I'v just started paining it blue - a dark blue - all of it to begin with. I was thinking of trying to mask off the undergear and wheels and spray the body alone in a lighter blue. I was thinking of trying to line the wheels down the centre of each spoke - perhaps yellow ochre, and the same for the bodywork. This is meant to be a high status vehicle - the owner can afford to transport it and the horse by rail - so he must be in the first class compartment of coach 15, with his servants and luggage in the compartments over the bogies. So I will try to make it live up to that idea!

Re: 3 D Printing 16mm models
An update.
Firstly progress on painting the Phaeton:
The wheels are almost right - just minor slips in the lining to correct. The body - is not lined properly so I will paint over it and reline it.
Pursuing my preparations for trying out a new resin printer I have been working out how to create specific figures. I know the printing is very rough - and that makes it impossible to get the painting right - but it does indicate where I can get to with this so far. Drivers for the Wren and 4415. I have created these drivers in "Makehuman" and adjusted their arms and legs in "Blender". Took a few tries to get it right, but here are the results.
The driver for 4415 straight out of the printer:
and cleaned up and offered up to the loco:
and finished:
and similarly the wren driver:
At least the figures look as if they fit in the space. The clothes are just cobbled together from the clothes that are on offer as pre-created "assets" in the "makehuman" community forum. That is a bit limiting - and I am working on how to at least modify those clothes, if not make my own. The big potential advantage of this as a process is that individual figures can be created. Just imagine making that quarry workers train (I made this time last year now) - with 100 different figures!

Looking good Trevor, much better than stock figures.
Interesting that the fascets are visible on yours, the same as they were on mine. Not sure if its an artefact from MH or Blender

Re: 3 D Printing 16mm models
Do they print out with the same facets on the resin printer?

Re: 3 D Printing 16mm models
Trever,
The short answer is yes, they appear to be much the same.
If you look at https://gardenrails.org/forum/viewtopic ... r&start=15
The driver figure at the bottom of Steve's set of pictures is my MH-> Blender figure which he printed on his resin printer. It looks a better print than my 'Dr Who alien' effect, further up the thread, , but still shows the facets.

Re: 3 D Printing 16mm models
The Phaeton looks good Trevor. Can I suggest though, that the wheels are lined around the side of them also. You would find that they mostly were and are. Besides it makes them look more elegant and richer...

Re: 3 D Printing 16mm models
Yes I realised after I posted it that I had seen that set of posts and remembered the facets. I suppose its just the mesh which defines the surface of the figure / clothes being printed accurately.
I have tried to use the shooting feature in sketchup - which works on the screen but seems to revert to the actual outline when exported as an STL file. Have you any experience of success with that feature?

Re: 3 D Printing 16mm models
Sorry, I've never heard of the shooting feature? I just did a quick search and it appears to be something to do with advanced camera in Sketchup Pro?Trevor Thompson wrote: ↑Tue Dec 15, 2020 11:20 am Yes I realised after I posted it that I had seen that set of posts and remembered the facets.
