Mamod loco Plans

A very popular starting point for Live Steam. With their low cost comes a number of problems which can be discussed here

Post by dewintondave » Tue Sep 08, 2015 11:01 am

I want to build a Mamod :D Are there any plans available showing the basic dimensions and outline of the classic Mamod loco?

Best wishes,
Dave

Now that's a first, I've never known anyone who wants to build one from scratch before. I doubt there are any plans as such, the original locomotive design still being in production by MSS. I have got some basic CAD drawings I did for the kids at work to colour in if they would be of use ?

Build your own Mamod...basically, build your own Janet. Fantastic However a couple of tweaks I'd think of, but alas have not the facilities or competency:

1)Steampipe to reverser block joint - a thread or a grip to prevent this from being pushfit only and slipping out/moving back in the rev block

2)Cylinders - for an 0-4-0, have longer pistons so the cylinders power the rear axle a la Locobox?

Definitely, I did this on my latter two De Wintons.

If someone could sell piston replacements I take it the steam port hole dimensions would need to change too?

Yes, the ports get really quite close together. The ports stay open longer, which is good for narrow gauge operations.

I have also thought of doing an ala locobox loco, but it has only been a though due to lack of drawings :( . if someone of higher intelligence can draw them that would be amazing :D

I would love bigger diameter cylinders for my Mamod, slower running and more power.

It would only be a 10 minutes job to fit as well, unfortunately I Don't have the skills and equipment to make them :-(
Put that light out!
