Janet questions
Now we all know the troubles that one can have with a mamod or mss loco but will the problems still occur with a janet? by problems i mean loose wheels, gauge glass leaking and so on. im looking at buying a janet some time in the near future but before i do i would love some reasurance from you guys.
my mate has a de winton from roy and its a stunning loco and runs like a swiss watch, can i expect the same from a janet?
what is the run time on a janet from a single gas tank full?
from what i have seen of the the janet it looks a great loco and well worth the money.
cheers in advance
james

No they should not. For one, Janets have steel wheels not mazak ones, and the steelers are not press-fitted on in the same fashion as the Mamod/MSS and so should not loosen on the axle. Even better, they have better bearings.
The gauge glass on Janets are held in by proper threads, not a pushfit system. Furthermore, it's a proper glass water sight, not a plastic window sheet so it's tougher. [/quote]
Yes you can. Roy builds the Janets / Janet spares to a much higher quality than old-Mamod did /MSS do. His cylinders positively transformed Swordbreaker. The Jane design when the prototype was made back in the days of IPE was described as "what Mamod should have built" and it proves the "Mamod mechanics" can work.my mate has a de winton from roy and its a stunning loco and runs like a swiss watch, can i expect the same from a janet?
With the RWM Janet, the only 'questionable' hangover from the original 80s design days is the pushfit of the steam pipe into the reverser block. However I trust Roy ensures there is enough steampipe length that it is tensed inside the revblock and no room to slip backwards.

15-25mins, depending how they're driven and what load. Also depends what gas tank. Beware if you get a large gas tank; you would need to keep an eye on water and topup somewhere through the proceedings. My engine has an old PPS 'Large' horizontal and it can power 1 and a half boiler fills.

Agreed, they are fantastic and Roy is a pleasure to deal with. Roy offers great tech support for his engines and spare parts too. If you like your "Mamods" [note the air quotes; in 16mm 'Mamod' as an adjective seems to carry a stigma and I wince when some uses it to describe my engine as there is no Mamod engineering or critical parts left on it] ...
...then go get a Janet.

Hi James, doing well here ta muchly even if work and the weather have rained off much recently.
Buy a Janet, they are ace. I handled a PPS Janet about 18months ago and the quality in parts was easily felt compared to a Mamod/MSS loco, even the bodywork pieces are better made.
With your Mamod orientated railway, I may have to bring a railtour down someday
