Buying a MSS loco but where ?

A very popular starting point for Live Steam. With their low cost comes a number of problems which can be discussed here

Buying a MSS loco but where ?

Post by REIGNAC » Sat Nov 30, 2013 8:16 am

I choose a MSS loco, mostly because I don't have enought money to buy anything else and because...
I really like it !
After a Goolgle search I found these two online shops who sell MSS locos for 45mm track. Thanks for your advices.

I would recommend making contact directly with these suppliers so that you can determine if they have 45mm gauge engines in stock.

I have purchased many times from Dream Steam and would suggest that this be a good on-line retailer to use.

I have purchased from Chas Steam on occasion but DS is cheaper for the MSS loco and also offers secure on-line order capability.

I wouldn't go for Dream Steam if I were you. I personally haven't dealt with them, but others on the forum have, and recently, the quality of their service has apparently fallen dramatically. Don't MSS have they're own website?

Just for balance, I actually have dealt with Dream Steam recently and everything was excellent including the items I purchased and the quality of service.

MSS do have a web site but I have not ever bought anything from it. This is it here http://www.steammodels.com/

G1 standard loco here http://www.steammodels.com/MSS_Models/L ... k-Built-G1

Sorry, I was just putting out a word of warning, since some of the guys on here have had some bad experiences in the past. If however Dream Steam are doing well again, then that's great.

For the other side of the balance here are my woes:

I am sharing so that others can be forewarned of my problems as I do not wish them on anyone.

For the benefit of anyone not wanting the read my comprehensive post above I had problems with two sets of upgraded wheels that took three weeks to get replacements and I believe you too had problems superbiker? Albeit you had no problems obtaining replacements.

I had to verbally wrench them out of their hands whilst being lied to in the process.

I did have problems with wheels from DS but as stated already - I use DS for lots of my requirements - I just will not be getting anymore steel wheels from them.

I am sure REIGNAC has browsed the forum and seen the threads about DS and the wheels.

DS are still and will remain an excellent source for MSS locos and rolling stock. They sell them for less that MSS lists them on there own web site. I have ordered many many times from DS - in fact I hate to think how many  and would have no problem with purchasing from them again.

I hope all the threads on this sub-forum do not have to become so narrowed down to a topic (DS) that has now been dealt with.

Good luck REGNIAC with whatever you chose to buy - I am sure there will be plenty of help available on here with your choice of MSS loco!

I purchased an MSS tank from Dream steam and the service was excellent. I have since ordered upgrade parts from them and will be using them in the future.
I think, like superbiker_uk, one bad product has caused some problems which don't reflect well on the rest of the companys products and service.
Best of luck with your new engine whoever you buy from.
John

See you soon in another topic about my new MSS loco! :D
