Thanks Rod
Nice 2mm models.
Your eyesight must be a lot better and fingers a lot more nimble than mine - no way I could contemplate N gauge. I struggle now with 16mm.....

I'm going to show my ignorance.
What is a coal bin for?
Was it to hold coal before it was shoveled into loco tenders? - would have been a lot of work.
Or did it hold coal for sale to the public?

Greg,
They held coal which had been delivered by rail to a local coal merchant. The coal merchant then shovelled it into 1cwt sacks, to be delivered to domestic customers, originally by horse and cart, then more recently by lorry.

Hi Greg
This video more or less sums it up.

Great video Rik, despite it being a Winter scene there is a distinct lack of 'Snowflakes' there. How would they manage today?

Ah, that video takes me back. I can remember as a small child being terrified of the coal delivery men, to my then mind huge blokes with black hands and faces from the coal dust and the leather (?) reinforcing patches on their jacket shoulders for some reason has always stuck in my mind. Not forgetting the phenomenal noise that reverberated through the house as they used to tip the sacks into the coal cellar.

I knew the chap in your coal office reminded me of someone...

This isn't the place to get political, but suffice to say I'll be using the merchants at one of your other stations when I need a sack or two of coal!

I love the detail you're putting in to creating this scene, inspirational stuff, it'll look great out in the garden...

Cheers,

Andrew.

Thanks for the compliment, Andrew.
As for the other observation. Maybe I should make sure I include some figures of other political persuasions to maintain balance ..... :?

I'm in the process of landscaping the coal yard at Beeston Castle. Just waiting for the SBR to set, then a bit of tidying and some minor detailing and I'll post the end result.

Just before the Heavens open (again), I nipped outside and took a few piccies of the coal yard in its (near) final form.

First one shows how it fits into the cramped yard at Beeston Castle station as a whole.

Moving in a bit closer.

And then from the opposite direction.

Still a bit more titivating to be done, but getting closer to ticking this one off the todo list.

Maybe the PLR's motto should be, 'A quart in a pint pot' ..... :)

Thanks Rod,
You're too kind. I'm sure yours will be every bit as good if not better - your workshop/office interior inspired me to have a go at putting an interior in mine.

Hi Rik you have modelled your coal bins nicely. Thanks for the link to the tutorial as I will definitely be having a go once my garden layout is built.

Thanks Kevin
They are a fairly painless way of starting to make your own buildings etc. Doesn't matter if you make any mistakes - with coal bins you can always say they were meant to look like that ..... ;)
